NAIROBI, Kenya — The Wall Street Journal reports that the United States is considering withdrawing or relocating some of its military forces currently stationed in Saudi Arabia. This potential shift follows escalating friction between Washington and Riyadh regarding regional security strategies.

Central to the tension are disagreements over ongoing regional hostilities involving Iran and the protection of maritime traffic transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The report notes that the U.S. has utilized more than 100 military aircraft, operating from various Middle Eastern bases and naval vessels, to maintain the freedom of navigation in the strait. Officials cited Saudi Arabia’s unexpected reluctance to provide sufficient support as a complicating factor, noting that while the kingdom’s airspace and bases are critical to these missions, cooperation has fallen short of U.S. expectations.

U.S. officials informed the Wall Street Journal that this lack of alignment necessitated a partial suspension of “Operation Project Freedom”—an initiative previously announced by President Donald Trump to ensure safe passage for vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

While the U.S. is evaluating the potential withdrawal of personnel or their redeployment to Israel or Jordan, no final decision has been reached. American officials have yet to confirm the details of the report.
