Borkena News Desk
Borkena, Toronto – Eyob Tekalegne, National Bank of Ethiopia Governor, offered noticeably a politically laden narrative of the “gains” of macro-economic reform.
“Days are gone where there is center and periphery,” he said speaking at the Ethiopia Delivers summit which the government organized.
Liberalization of the economy and banking system including the market-based forex regime which led to the free fall of Ethiopian birr against reserve currency. Eyob Tekaligne sees it as a sort of revolutionary achievement. Notably, there have been indications that Abiy Ahmed’s administration did introduce the reforms under the influence of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Furthermore, National Bank governor made claims that “pro-poor” spending has increased.
He painted a growth in export earnings which he linked to the liberalization measure (core neoliberal policy measures) – or the reform measure as he puts it.
