Toronto – For many political observers in Ethiopia and Eritrea, Isaias Afeworki’s, now president of Eritrea, link to the CIA in the early days of his guerrilla time is known.
It is also known that the Eritrean struggle for independence was supported by several Arab countries with the aspiration to expand Arabization. Ethiopia has been a target in that regard.
The video featured below, from Meskerem Media, highlights the circumstances under which Isaias Afeworki was recruited as a CIA agent in the late 70’s.

Thank The Almighty the YouTube version of this video came with the CC subtitles in English. But before this video was put together I had read a few articles about Al-Toweel Isu engagement with Western security agencies. But there weren’t any credible evidence that he was contacted and recruited by CIA or other Western agencies before he took to the bushes. He was a failing student at the then Selassie College in Addis/Finfinnee. He wan on academic probation and just a step away from being expelled from the university for poor grades when he decided to join ELF. I have read a story of him and a few others sent to communist China in late 1960’s for military/political training. Mao was still around and the deadly so-called ‘cultural revolution’ where Mao butchered tens of millions of his own citizens from starvation and mass executions. Then it did not take too long for Isu and others to squabble with the ELF lead45rship. His group went into hiding to a safe joint and that was when he contacted US military officers deployed at the then US communication base in Asmara. He and his group were about to be dealt a telling blow by the ELF. He was contacting everyone who he thought would save him. Even the Emperor’s governor of Eritrea was in the mix.
This hastily produced video tries to blame the CIA for the secession of Eritrea. Did the CIA supply ISU and his guns and other war materials? None whatsoever! Besides hostile Arab nations those who contributed to Isu’s success in seceding were some of our own groups. TPLF played a huge part followed by others like EPDM, OPDO and EPRP. I remember reading military communiques by these groups about their joint operations with EPLF/A in which they killed and captured members of the Ethiopian militia and regular army. EPLF/A was reported to know well in advance the war plans of the Ethiopian defense forces. Who do you think was providing that to Isu’s front/army? He had devoted fans embedded in the Ethiopian defense outfit. CIA never did that and USA will never do that to the old country.
First and foremost we should get our act together. Blaming others is just another lame excuse. It is classic cop-out.
To validate my claim of the decisive support EPLF was getting from our own opposition groups going back the 1970’s, all you have to do is go to just two videos down on this same video section of this esteemed website. You will find two countrymen with a history of working with Isu hand and gloves. I remember reading an article on this very esteemed website about one of them in the video several years ago. He was talking about how he joined Isu’s army and fought the Ethiopian army. There several others like him in the early 1970’s and went on to found EPRP military wing the EPRA. The 2nd person in the video was a member of a group that was scavenging at the dumpsites in Asmara for a decade and half beginning 2005 and 2019. This time it is Debre, OLA factions of armed groups in Amhara and Beni regions. I told you those ‘re-invented’ lasagnas test mind blowing finger licking good in Piccolo Roma. Isu has been having a bowl with playing all of them.
Nuff said for now.
