Toronto – Ethiopian authorities have arrested journalist Salsawit Baynesagn Yimer. Sources in Addis Ababa confirm that it has been more than ten days since security forces took her into custody.
She has not appeared in court since her arrest.
Salsawit Baynesagn has been one of the leading voices in Ethiopia speaking out against rights violations in the country, among other issues. She has a large following on social media platforms, including TikTok.
Before launching her independent reporting through social media pages, she worked as an investigative journalist for state-owned Walta and Fana Television.
Her family in Addis Ababa has confirmed her arrest. She is reportedly being held at the Third Police Division in the capital, Addis Ababa.
Days before her arrest, she released a video criticizing the reported massacre of Orthodox Christians in the Arsi zone of the Oromia region, where similar incidents have been repeatedly reported.
Some activists believe her arrest is linked to her advocacy for Orthodox Christians facing persecution in parts of the Oromia region.
The latest round of reported massacres has triggered widespread anger and criticism across Ethiopia. Social media posts have largely focused on the incident.
Residents of the affected communities say the government is part of the problem. Some have gone further, alleging that it may have been involved in facilitating the attacks. The government has responded by arresting individuals who have strongly expressed such views and called for justice.
More than a week after her arrest, the Federal Police has not disclosed the reason for Salsawit’s detention.

To those who arrested this female journalist I say, shame on you. If you disagree with what she said or wrote, your reaction should never go beyond having a civil dialogue with her. Female journalists are extremely rare in that country. Such attempt to suffocate the already few female journalists will discourage others who are thinking about joining the profession. Let our daughter go and leave her alone. If she wrote about the recent killings of civilians in Arsi, what about it? Is this an attempt to deny it? It is a proven fact that it had happened even though the number of the victims vary and the Muslims farmers who were killed in the most savage ways trying to protect their Christian neighbors was never mentioned or intentionally glossed over by those who reported the barbaric act.
Again, leave this daughter of ours alone and let her go back to her family.
