Nairobi, Kenya – Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi have agreed to launch “concrete programs” in the areas of ports, maritime transport, and regional security following talks in Cairo.
According to discussions described as “extensive” by both sides, the two leaders reviewed bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments. They agreed to deepen cooperation in strategic sectors, including port infrastructure, maritime transport, and marine resources.
A statement issued on June 8, 2026, by Eritrea’s Ministry of Information said the talks aimed to elevate what it described as “historical and brotherly ties of friendship and cooperation” between the two countries. It added that both sides share a commitment to expanding bilateral relations.
The statement said the two leaders agreed to launch concrete programs in marine resources, port infrastructure development, and maritime transport, building on earlier economic, political, and diplomatic agreements between Eritrea and Egypt.
The meeting comes amid growing geopolitical competition over the Red Sea corridor and increased regional attention on maritime trade routes, port access, and security arrangements in the Horn of Africa.
The leaders also discussed developments in the Red Sea basin, the Middle East, and the broader Horn of Africa region. According to the statement, the talks covered economic, political, diplomatic, and security dimensions of regional and global developments.
Following the presidential talks, Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held separate discussions on mechanisms to implement the agreements reached in Cairo. The ministers reviewed implementation details of the agreed agendas, reflecting both governments’ intention to translate the talks into practical cooperation.
However, the statement did not provide details on timelines, funding arrangements, or specific projects under the new cooperation framework.
President Isaias arrived in Egypt on Sunday for a three-day official visit expected to focus on bilateral cooperation, regional security, and developments in the Horn of Africa and the Middle East.
The visit follows a series of high-level engagements between the two countries over the past year. The two presidents were last reported to have held extensive talks in Cairo in October 2025, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing security challenges in the region.
During that meeting, Egypt reiterated its support for Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. President Isaias, in turn, expressed appreciation for Egypt’s role in promoting stability and development in the Horn of Africa and East Africa, while calling for deeper economic cooperation and closer coordination on regional and international issues.
Earlier diplomatic exchanges have also included a February visit by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty to Asmara, where he delivered a message from President el-Sisi to President Isaias. Those talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations and advancing a trilateral coordination mechanism involving Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia.
Launched in October 2024 in the Eritrean capital, the trilateral framework seeks to “harmonize positions” on regional security issues, including developments in the Red Sea, Libya, and the Sahel. The initiative has drawn attention in Addis Ababa amid rising tensions between Ethiopia and Egypt over regional alignments.
Ethiopia accuses Egypt of pursuing what it described as a “provocative” strategy against it, further intensifying concerns over shifting regional dynamics. Ethiopia has linked this approach to broader geopolitical tensions, particularly since it began expressing interest in gaining access to the sea.

Did you see that? Look, look. Look at el-Sisi’s shoes. They’re like a mirror. It must be no other than Al-Toweel since he is the only one who knows how to shine Arab shoes like a mirror. What a nice Khaddaam(Gitlow Hudson house nigger’!!!
Isaias wasted his life and the lives of two generations of Eritreans without delivering peace and/or economic prosperity. All he did in 33 years was to send Eritrean youth to military/death camps, to war fronts, and as mercenaries to Yemen to fight Saudi war, train insurgents in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Somalia, Somaliland, and deal in money-laundering, arms, contraband items, etc. His understanding of leadership is to lose sleep over deception and force others lose theirs. Fear and violence are two pillars of his government’s policy. He is now one foot in the grave, though he wants the world to believe his died hair would buy him some time. He has groomed his son to takeover after him. But nobody is certain if his plans are to survive his demise. Isaias is a mean, mean and incompetent human being given over as a scourge for bloody belligerence of Eritrean elites.
