Addis Ababa Media Council
Press Release
June 4, 2026
The Addis Ababa Media Council calls upon the people of Ethiopia, the residents of our capital, and the international community to completely reject the fraudulent, predetermined results of Monday’s “election.”
This election was nothing more than a coordinated farce. Genuine voting was impossible across nearly 45% of the country, including all of Tigray, most of the Amhara region, and volatile parts of Oromia. Despite heavy-handed government coercion, the public overwhelmingly boycotted the polls. In Addis Ababa and Amhara, youth turnout between the ages of 18 and 30 was virtually non-existent, while active resistance from Amhara Fano forces successfully disrupted the regime’s staged voting plans across most of that region.
To deceive global onlookers and mimic a competitive democracy, the ruling Prosperity Party deliberately left its own candidates off the ballot in 15% of Addis Ababa’s districts and 48 federal parliamentary seats nationwide. It is clear any seats won by opposition groups were not earned through a free vote. They were gifted by the regime to manufacture a false narrative of a multi-party system.
This systemic fraud is exactly why the majority of international observers refused to participate. Aside from the African Union and IGAD, which are headquartered right here in Addis Ababa, global monitors stayed away because the National Election Board of Ethiopia completely lacks independence, genuine opposition parties were systematically excluded, and active conflict prevented citizens in Amhara, Tigray, and Oromia from voting safely.
This entire exercise is a blatant attempt by the regime to buy itself another five years of oppressive rule. We urge all Ethiopians not to be misled by state propaganda. Your voices were not heard, and this upcoming parliament belongs solely to the Prosperity Party, not the people.
We must stand united. We call on all citizens and global partners to reject these fraudulent results and join the struggle for true democracy and politics based on civic values and not on the hate politics of identity.
