Ethiopia’s Election Board Rejects Yisehak’s Withdrawal From Election

Toronto – The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) on Tuesday rejected Yishak Wolday‘s withdrawal of candidacy for next month’s Federal  election.

The board said “The decision has no legal basis.”  It is saying that it is too late for candidates to withdraw from the election.

One of the reasons that the Board mentioned is that ballot papers have been printed and have already arrived in the country indicating that candidates can not withdraw after May 1, 2026.

Abera Negus, Addis Ababa based legal professional, shared on his social media page citing views that the Board’s election does not have a legal basis making a reference to Election Proclamation 1162/2011.

The argument is that the legal instrument did not specify a time frame as to when Candidates can or can not withdraw from the election.

There appears to be also a misunderstanding about Yishak’s request.  His request was just to withdraw from the election. However, it appears that the Board understood his request to mean “cancellation of candidacy.”

Notably, Yishak announced on Monday, borkena has reported it, that he wrote a letter to the NEBE requesting to withdraw from the election citing irregularities in the electoral process.

He was registered to run in Arada electoral district representing the Collation for Ethiopian Unity (CEU). He is a public relation head of Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP) which is one of CEU member parties.

Other opposition pirates including Enat Party, which is also CEU member party, have been reporting electoral process irregularities as ruling party officials are reportedly engaged in intimidation and harassment practices in Southern Ethiopia.

  1. Yes Ma’am! Yes Ma’am!!! This is how clueless some in the opposition are. Listen to what our sister the over-qualified Chairperson H.E. MelatWork bint Hailu is telling you, young man. Your name is already on the printed ballot paid by the poor taxpayers. What you did is not respectful to the people. If you lose, so what? You should not feel ashamed because you lost. You should rather be humbled by the results you didn’t expect and move on giving peace another chance.

    Peace y’all!!!

  2. We know that the former OPDO, now the current Prosperity Party, is the child of the TPLF, one of the worst election riggers in Africa, and we are not surprised if Prosperity continues in the same pattern. If Prosperity wants legitimacy and recognition by the international community, and above all by the Ethiopian people, it would be wise to comply with election rules, rather than intimidating competitors and using state power to interfere in elections.

  3. You watch when bigots and misogynists going after this over qualified sister. But our seasoned and fearless sister will not be intimidated by clueless dumb bells. They have finally found their match. Let’s all rally around her!!!
