Addis Ababa Mayor’s remark on Hunger in the city infuriates millions

Toronto – There have been several cases of ruling party officials politically motivated derogratory remarks on Ethiopia’s “economic growth” and “progress”  that hurted the emotions of people.

The latest Addis Ababa Mayor’s remark is a whole new level.

Celebrating what the government claims to be the 29th “feeding center,” Adanech Abiebie said “she does not understand why people in Addis Ababa beg for food. They can just go to any one of the feeding centers in Addis Ababa and have a hot and delicious meal.” (watch the video below).

For the ruling “Prosperity party” imitating social policy and service deliveries  in the affluent countries in the western world is as simple as projecting a narrative in state-owned media outlets.

The Mayor  made it sound that those who beg for food in Addis Ababa are a matter of habit, not necessity.  For context, begging in Ethiopian culture used to be the most shameful act to the point that those in critical and dire condition would pretend to be alright. Noticeably that very culture has changed over the past thirty years or so, probably suggesting the level of poverty has become unbearable.
