Toronto – With only two weeks left until the 7th general election, Ethiopia’s National Electoral Board (NEBE) is reportedly asking for 10 billion birr additional budget.

It was during a meeting with the Parliamentary Budget and Finance Standing Committee this week that the Board made the request.

The Board reportedly said that the additional budget is required due to the security situation in some parts of the country that needs work related to safety measures.

Unforeseen post-election expenses areas where there could be potential controversy and where election is not organized are also cited as reasons for the additional budget.

Last month, the board disclosed that it spent an extra 1.5 billion birr due to the extension of voter registration by two weeks.

The initial budget allocated for the election was 10 billion birr.

Detailed information about the latest request to the parliament is unavailable. Notably, the Ethiopian Parliament banned journalists following a  report of audit findings involving government officials in 92 billion birr corruption scandals.

Over 50.5 million voters are registered for the election which is scheduled to take place next month.

  1. With our sister H.E. Chairperson Melatwork bint Hailu watching it all as a hawk it gives me confidence that the money she is asking will be well spent. I’m still urging the opposition to participate in the election as candidates and not to boycott even if the odds of winning seats are not in your favor. If you win any seat, keep it and be present in all sessions in the parliament. Do not make the error made in 2005. That was totally not intelligent.
