Toronto – The government of Canada is announcing an initiative to transition 33,000 workers to permanent residence as part of “ In-Canada Workers Initiative” which was introduced during the 2025 budget year.
It focuses on areas the government considers to have “the greatest impact”, according to a news release from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada . One of the areas identified for this program is “supporting rural and remote communities that are experiencing labour shortages in key economic sectors.”
The implementation is between 2026 and 2027.
At least 20,000 workers will transition to permanent residence status, as the number is what the department is aiming for, and the remaining applicants will be processed next year.
“As part of this initiative, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is initially accelerating eligible applications from existing inventories of work permit holders who have applied for permanent residence,” said Immigration and Citizenship Canada said in the news release.
Details about this program are available on the CIC website here
