Zegeye Asfaw Passes Away at 84 In Adddis Ababa

Toronto – Zegeye Asfaw, ethnic Oromo prominent legal professional, who is linked to the “land to the tiller” proclamation in the 1974 Ethiopian Revolution passed away. 

News of his passing emerged on social media on Tuesday. 

He has been also prominent in influencing major policies in Ethiopia since the time of colonel Mengistu, and has served in a ministerial capacity including as Minister of Agriculture and Minister for Justice. 

He has also a role in the establishment of Human rights advocacy organization in Ethiopia. 

His most recent role was a member of the National Dialogue Commission of Ethiopia – an entity that has been struggling to get a moral legitimacy among Ethiopians as it is widely seen as a tool for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government.  

According to sources, he passed away a day after attending a book launch ceremony on the life of Lencho Leta, another Ethnic Oromo Nationalist who is credited for the Oromo Nationalist Movement. 

He was  84 years of age.  He is survived by his wife Tsehay and three Children. Funeral Arrangement not disclosed at the time of this writing.

  1. Oh, Zegeye Assaffaa – the notoriously anti-Amhara whose life’s mission seemed to be causing as much harm as possible to the Amhara people, driven by deeply-rooted hatred toward Amhara – has just died?!
    Good riddance!

    • It is people like you who are cause for so much pain and misunderstandings in the country. You don’t gloat over somebody’s death. You need to learn to be respectful at least for the sake of survivors. Ato Zegeye’s contribution was his leadership to dismantle centuries-old brutal land tenure system. All Ethiopians, irrespective of ethnic affiliation suffered under that system. BTW, you don’t represent the Amhara. So, I dont take your word seriously.
