“No Ballots White Bullets Fly” Global Protest

Toronto – Ethiopians in the Diaspora have organized a global protest against the 7th General Election which is scheduled for June 2026. 

Protestors will be chanting slogans like ” “No Ballots White Bullets Fly” and “Our vote will not legitimize Tyranny.”  

According to the organizers, it will take place across many cities in Europe and North America between May 1st and May 23. 

“There can be no free and fair elections in Ethiopia while the Abiy Ahmed regime continues its genocidal war on the Amhara people,” the message in the flyer reads. 

Stockholm, Seattle, Brussels, Washington, Ottawa, Paris, Manitoba, Melbourne, Rome, Oslo and London are among cities where the protest is organized.

The Ethiopian Diaspora has been actively, which provided support in the early months and years of Abiy Ahmed terms in Office, protesting against the government after the later lost its legitimacy for multiple reasons including the unending massacre of Orthodox Christians in Oromia region.

Severe security crisis including kidnapping and politically motivated massacre of innocent civilians – especially in the Oromo region of Ethiopia -,  a full-fledged conflict in the Amhara and Oromia regions of Ethiopia, and unbearable cost of living crisis across the country are among the reasons why Abiy Ahmed’s government has been facing resistance for many years now. 

The War in Amhara is still raging and many areas are under rebel forces but the government claims otherwise. Many parts of Oromia region are also experiencing conflict as the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) is waging a protracted armed resistance.

A considerable part of the Benishangul region of Ethiopia   is still experiencing security problems. 

In the North, the Tigray region is heading to what appears to be another round of war – something that has alarmed the diplomatic community including the European Union and the United States government. Elections are not arranged in the region. 

Ethiopian Diaspora organizations are arguing that the Election can not be truly an Ethiopian election as most parts of the country are conflict zones where election can not take place.  

Opposition parties in the country have been threatening to withdraw from the election citing problems with level playing field.  They allege the process is flawed which they say can not lead to a fair and free election. 

Meanwhile, the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia said it has registered over 50 million voters but it is not independently verified.
