Toronto – Tadesse Worede, a former Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) official and commander of what was formed as a “Tigray Defense Force” who was known to have a soft heart for the organization, seems to be having enough of it now.
He reportedly rejected TPLF’s opposition to extension of his terms as president of the Tigray Region Interim Administration.
Last week, the TPLF released a statement opposing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s decision to extend Tadesse Worede’s terms. It said the decision is against the Pretoria Agreement.
The agreement ended the two years bloody war between the TPLF led Tigray regional administration (notably Tadesse Worede was commanding the TPLF army at the time which was organized as “Tigray Defense force”) and Abiy Ahmed’s led Federal government.
TPLF’s argument is that appointment of the president to the interim administration should emanate from a consultative process to which it should be a part. The office of the prime minister told BBC Amharic last week that Tadesse’s extension of the term is based on legislation introduced after the Pretoria Agreement, and sees Tadesse extension as “legitimate.”
Tadesse was first appointed on April 1 2025 and took oath in the presence of members of the diplomatic community in Addis Ababa. He was given eight missions including the return of displaced people to their places and disarming armed forces in the region.
He had an evaluative meeting with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and some members of his government. He reported his administration’s performance for the ending year which has not yet been made public.
Remarking on TPLF’s opposition to his appointment, he reportedly said “it is a right to decline offer for power[administrative]” However, he added telling me “You too do not accept power” is unacceptable.
Despite strong opposition from TPLF, which spells possible danger to his life, Tadesse vows that he will not run from Tigray. He was appointed to the position last year after Getachew Reda, who held an interim government administration position, was toppled in what was described as a creeping “coup d’etat.”
The former TPLF spokesperson and foreign relation, Getachew, then left Tigray for fear of possible assassination. The organization sees him as “traitor.” Tadesse’s fate does not seem to be different.
The TPLF ruled Ethiopia with iron first for nearly thirty years until it lost central government power in 2018 following a nationwide protest, and consequently retreated to Tigray. In 2020, it opened war against the Ethiopian Defense Force with the aim to take over power in Addis Ababa again. This time it did not work.
