Toronto – The office of the Prime Minister on Wednesday announced that Tadesse Worede’s term of office as President of the Tigray Region Interim Administration is extended for another year.
It is effective starting April 9, 2026. He was appointed last year for a one year period.
The extension came after a meeting between the prime minister and other Federal government officials including Defense Chief of Staff Berhanu Jula on the one hand and Tadesse Worede’s team on the other.
The meeting evaluated Tigray’s government performance against tasks the federal government planned when appointing Tadesse as Interims president last year.
Return of internally displaced people, disarmament of the TPLF forces (estimated to be over 200,000), restoring peace and security to the region and ending what the federal government described as illegal foreign relation that violates Ethiopia’s sovereignty – this is a reference to TPLF and Eritrean officials relations – were among the issues that Tadesse was tasked to overcome.
The Federal government has not released its assessment of the performance in the region. However, opposition politicians operating in the Tigray region have been accusing Tadesse’s administration of poor performance and tendency to appease the TPLF officials.
Extension of the terms to lead the region appears to be questionable by Tigray politicians.
The office of the Prime Minister cited section 62 (9) of the constitution and Proclamation number 359/1995 article 14 subsection 2 (b) and declaration from the council of ministers number 479/2013 to justify the extension of Tadesse’s terms.
No official reaction from TPLF or other opposition parties in the region regarding the decision.

Good news for the mothers in Tigray region. Now the can breathe a sigh of relief that their sons and daughters will not be marched into raging fires. I wish Brother Tadesse Worede success in his untiring endeavor to bring peace to his besieged region.
These days, we are all preoccupied with what has been going on between Iran, Israel and USA. As the consequence of the conflict we are feeling the pinch at the pump. Let’s hope it will not be as severe as in 1973. But there is another tragedy in the offing that will involve our countrymen and women who live in Lebanon. Let’s all of us have them in our prayers and render them any help they need in every way we can. I also call upon all human rights organizations to include these immigrants in their priority list for providing the life saving endeavor. May The Good Lord blanket them from being caught up in the crossfire of this brutal bloody conflict!!! This also includes those who live in the Arabian Peninsula.
