Toronto – Ethiopia’s Ministry of Transport and Lodgistic on Wednesday said it will “soon” start implementing new license plates for vehicles.Time line is unspecified.
The department said it has been undertaking preparatory works so far.
The Ministry is also monetizing plate numbers for those who want to have a specified license plate. They will be auctioned.
The ministry invited applications for it before it starts distribution of new plate numbers. They could be submitted within one week.
It was in May 2025 that the Ministry announced that it will be introducing a uniform nationwide license plates for all vehicles.
The existing ones are based on regional states. Ethiopia’s Federal arrangement is based on ethnicity. The plate numbers were bearing the name of the ethnic based regions.
At the time, Tigray regional states opposed the introduction of a nationwide license plate number to be administered by the Ministry of Transport. There was even a tendency to describe it as “unconstitutional.”

this is interesting news for ethiopian vehicle owners. i’ve been wondering when they’d finally update the license plate system – the current plates have been in use for such a long time now. it’s good to hear they’ve been doing preparatory work behind the scenes.
the monetization aspect is something i think will generate a lot of discussion. on one hand, it could generate significant revenue for the government that could be put toward improving transport infrastructure. on the other hand, it raises concerns about fairness – will only wealthy individuals be able to get “desirable” plate numbers? that’s something the ministry should probably clarify better.
it would be helpful if they could provide more specific timeline details. “soon” is quite vague, and people would probably appreciate knowing what to expect in terms of when they need to make the switch, what the new plates will look like, and how much the monetization process will cost. hopefully they’ll release more information in the coming weeks.
i’m curious to see what the new plate design will be – hopefully something more modern and standardized than what we currently have. any updates on this would be appreciated as the story develops.
