Toronto – Addis Ababa City Administration on Sunday introduced a fare hike for all transport services in the city. It will come into effect as of March 16, 2022.

This is the second one in less than a year and half.

The new hike seems to have affected the most bus transport users – mostly residents with low income.  It ranges from five to twenty Ethiopian birr.

Fare for distances in a range of 2.5 kilometers are not affected by the new adjustment and will continue to be 10 Ethiopian birr.  Distances up to five kilometers saw a five-birr  increase. The new fare for the distance is 20 Ethiopian birr.

The fare for distances between 15.1 kilometers and 17.5 kilometers is now up by 10 birr. It used to be 40 birr for the distance. The highest fare for taxis is fifty-five birr.

Bus service – which is run by the city administration itself – has seen the maximum increase. Routes that were charging fifty Ethiopian birr are now seventy.

Buses that were serving routes between thirty and fifty  kilometers distance will now be charging sixty birr after the 20 birr face increase. Routes that were charting fifty Ethiopian Birr are now seventy birr, up by twenty birr.

The price of gas in the country has seen a remarkable increase over the past two years. The latest price increase was announced last week. Ethiopia’s Trane and Regional Integration Ministry set the maximum price for premium quality to be 139 Ethiopian birr per liter.

The City Transport Authority on Sunday said the fare increase is because of the adjustment for the price of gas in the country. As many other countries, there is fear that conflict in the Persian gulf could aggravate the price hike further.

Several new regulations have been announced in the country in relation to the supply and distribution of gas. This week, the Ministry of finance announced that businesses that sell over the price the government set will be subjected to confiscation.
