Toronto – Ethiopian Citizens For Social Justice Party (also known as EZEMA), one of the leading opposition parties in the country poised to replace two of its leaders, according to reports from sources close to the party.

The Party has a scheduled congress on Sunday this week. Professor Berhanu Nega and Girma Seifu will be removed as leaders.

The party is said to have intention to elect young leaders to replace them. The identities of the young leaders is unspecified at this point.

The party has been facing extensive criticism over alignment with the ruling “Prosperity Party”, some consider it to be a full fledged clique, and “betraying” the peaceful struggle.

It was given one cabinet position in Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government, as was the case with National Movement of Amhara (NaMA) which suffered a split thereafter.

Berhanu Nega has been leading the Federal Ministry of Education as Minister while leading the EZEMA party as  Chairperson. He introduced several policy changes in the Ministry aimed at improving the quality of education in the country (including education in the institutions of higher learning) which was said to be at a disaster level.

Girma Seifu is another EZEMA leader who has been extensively criticized for political affection for the ruling party and particularly the prime minister. One of the most unpopular policies of the ruling government has been corridor development. It is said to have reduced hundreds of thousands of residents to poverty and homelessness.  Girma is known to be a champion of the corridor development program in the city. Many cite him as saying “what was displaced was poverty, not the poor.”

EZEMA started as a real opposition party only to lose public trust following what appears to be a policy of alignment (even support) to the ruling party.

The 7th Federal election is scheduled to take place this June. The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has been undertaking various activities over the past few weeks. The next scheduled activity is voter registration.
