Toronto – Ethiopian Citizens For Social Justice Party (EZEMA) is accusing the ruling prosperity party of imposing compulsory financial contributions from the business community. Public servants are also subjected to forced deduction from their salaries.

It is in the context of an election campaign that the ruling party is allegedly raising resources illegally.

In a statement it released on  Wednesday, it said it has received credible information that the ruling party is  violating political parties’ resource mobilization laws and financial practice. It is forcing the business community to pay a high amount of money, it added.

Some businesses are donating “voluntarily.”   The ruling party is doing outreach work in sub-cities and districts to meet businesses in person to ask for money for the party. It is also contacting some of them by phone, according to EZEMA.

The practice is one that “drifted from the law and morality, ” EZEMA said. Furthermore, it said it is one that harms efforts to build a multi-party system.

“Prosperity Party which claims to have 16 million members, that holds government structure and resources,” is deducting money from the salaries of public servants who are already struggling (due to unbearable cost of living).

EZEMA indicated that the ruling party is already utilizing government resources at will covertly and overtly  and is forcing public servants to contribute money as if it is not enough.

It called for the ruling party to fix what it called squinted conception of building a democratic system and refrain from “anti-democratic” practices.

EZEMA has been facing extensive criticism over allegedly working for the government under the cover of an opposition party. Berhanu Nega, leader of the party, is a cabinet member in Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government as Minister for Education.
