Toronto – The 65th anniversary of special operations command of the Ethiopian Defense Force concluded on Sunday in a ceremony organized at Hawassa Stadium.

Abiy Ahmed and some senior members of this government including House Speaker Tagesse Chafo attended the final day event.  Defense Chief of Staff Field Marshal Berhanu Jula was in attendance as well.

The 44th batch of elite commando forces graduated on the last day of the anniversary celebration.

” …by supporting brotherly people from the tip of Somalia to Massawa [Eritrea] we will work to ensure terrorist activities on the sea [Red Sea] are averted,” Abiy Ahmed said during his speech at the ceremony.

He also said that “Ethiopia has managed to build a strong and reliable physically and mentally ready army capable of ending war in a short time and equipped with “sophisticated technology.”

Abiy remarked on what he said is the mission of the army. “Our mission and vision is to build institutions that can be passed down from generation to generation,” he said.

A slogan with the portrait of Abiy Ahmed displayed at the Hawassa Stadium conveyed a specific message and it appears to be to Eritrea. The message was in Amharic the translation of which reads  “Like it or not we will not remain landlocked” (picture below).

Defense Chief of Staff,  Field Marshal Berhanu Jula, conveyed a similar message in his speech. He claimed a  “versatile, well-trained and reliable” army had been built.

There has been criticism in the opposition quarter that the army command structure is dominated by ethnic Oromos loyal to the ruling party. Abiy Ahmed, and his defense chief, claim the army is professional and independent that “looks like Ethiopia.”

The event was organized at a time when fears of renewed war between Ethiopia, Eritrea and the TPLF forces in the Tigray region of Ethiopia was heightened.

Recent multiple reports indicate that the Ethiopian Federal government has been developing mechanized units of the army in areas adjacent to the Tigray region and along the Eritrean border.

About two weeks ago a letter that is said to be from Gedion Timotheos requested Eritrea’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Osman Saleh,  for  “the withdrawal of Eritrean forces from areas in North Eastern Ethiopia.” Eritrea denied that its soldiers were on Ethiopian soil.

  1. Hats off to Abiy & Ethio Defense! You built this from scratch within such a short time! I am proud of you all!

NOTE: Menelik-II leased Djibouti to France for 99 years. The lease expired long ago but France neither renewed the lease nor returned Djibouti to Ethiopia! Successive governments in Ethiopia failed to take France to courts like the ICJ.

1). No Flip-Flopping on Affar [south of Mitsiwa (‘Massawa’) to north of Djibouti]: It is Ethiopia’s Affars’ Homeland & Ethiopia’s Red Sea Coast. Ethiopia MUST repossess it!

    i). 1991-1998: In 1991, the TPLF & EPLF/ELF co-invaded Ethiopia & co-ruled Ethiopia till 1998. In 1993, Eritrea seceded and also annexed Affar with TPLF’s complicity. TPLF & EPLF/ELF are Egypt’s Proxy Anti-Ethiopia Secessionists since the 1960s.

ii). 1998-2000 [EPLF-TPLF War]: In 1998, EPLF bombed Tigray’s Ayder Elementary School and triggered the war. EPLF also heavily mined the Affar border [with Egypt’s free landmines].

iii). “ፈንጂ ረጋጭ ጋላ”: TPLF kept its combatants & sent waves of Oromo soldiers to that front. Oromo Soldier death toll kept soaring! Eritreans called the Oromos: “ፈንጂ ረጋጭ ጋላ!”

2). Bahirè-Nègash | ‘Eritrea’ | Affar: Bahirè-Nègash was Ethiopia’s northern province till Italy occupied it [≈1890 to ≈1941] and renamed it ‘Eritrea’.

i). Bahirè-Nègash | Affar: Affar has never been part of Bahirè-Nègash even under Italy!

ii). Affar [1930-1991]: Under Haile-Selassie’s Monarchy [1930-1974], Affar was part of the Wollo Province! Under the Derg [1974-1991], it was the Affar Autonomous Region.

iii). ‘Eritrean Affar’ | ‘Ethiopian Affar’: This was concocted after 1991. The scheme was to land-lock Ethiopia and generate revenue for Eritrea’s survival [by charging Ethiopia Port Fees at Ethiopia’s own Asseb Port].
