Toronto –  International Crisis Group (ICG) sees a risk of deadly conflict involving the Ethiopian Federal government, “Tigray region” and Eritrea.

“The risk of hostilities involving Ethiopia, its northernmost Tigray region and its neighbour Eritrea remains high three years after the last major war in the area. African states and outside powers should urgently open back channels among the three governments to defuse tensions,” ICG  said in its latest report.

It sees different factors that could trigger an outbreak of the conflict. And it stressed ending conflict is not as easy as entering it.

It is urging state actors in Africa and elsewhere to tap into back channel diplomatic efforts to avert what is increasingly looking like an imminent conflict.

Worsening tension between Ethiopia and Eritrea is highlighted after PM Abiy Ahmed unveiled intentions to pursue sea access.

This week, credible sources from the region reported that the Ethiopian government  is building up troop presence along the Ethio-Eritrean border.  Mechanized units of the Ethiopian Defense Force are deployed along the border. Eritrean troops are already, it is alleged, in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. About two weeks ago, Ethiopia’s Minister For Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timotheos, wrote a letter to Eritrea calling for the withdrawal of Eritrean forces from North Eastern Ethiopia which Eritrea denied.
