Toronto – The National Bank of Ethiopia on Wednesday announced that it has appointed two external staff to the Monetary Policy Committee. However, it declined to disclose the identities of the appointees. No explanation is provided why their identities are not disclosed.
What the Bank announced is that the Board of Directors has approved the appointment. It was Eyob Tekalegn, the governor, who proposed the new appointment.
“The appointment of external monetary committee members strengthens the committee’s analytical capacity and supports the Board endorsing well-informed, evidence based monetary policy decisions,” the bank said in a brief statement it released on Wednesday.
It expressed confidence in the academic background and work experience of the appointees without specifying details about where the academic qualifications were obtained from, what institution/s they served before or what their nationalities are. However, it described them as “distinguished economists with strong academic credentials and extensive professional experience.”
Earlier this week, the bank appointed to new internal staff to Markets and Operations role, and technology department.
in a related development, the Bank announced on the same day that the governor held what it called “a productive discussion” with a United States Delegation led by Sarah Troutman, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of African Affairs.
U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ervin Massinga, was in attendance.
Eyob Tekalign has reportedly briefed the delegation on the “progress” of the major macroeconomic reforms introduced in July 2024. The Ethiopian currency lost well over 100 percent of its value against the U.S. Dollar following the reform.
The U.S. delegation is said to have expressed “interest in fostering a vibrant and sustainable economic partnership that benefits both nations.” The governor has expressed similar sentiments. The United States wielded a strong influence over the Ethiopian government especially after Abiy Ahmed took power in 2018.
