Toronto – Ethiopian Airlines is suspending domestic flights to the Tigray region of Ethiopia as conflict resurge is the region following recent TPLF military action in the Humera area.
Flights to Mekelle. Shire, Humera and Aksum are affected. Scheduled flights for Thursday were cancelled. The Ethiopian government or the Tigray Region Interim Administration did not remark about it.
Sources close to Ethiopian Airlines report that passengers who purchased tickets to the region have been notified via text message about the cancellation of the flights.
Although the airline has not specified the reasons, citizens report on social media link the decision with a renewed conflict in Telemt and Wolkait – areas that have been described as “contested areas.”
A text message sent to passengers, in Amharic, from Ethiopian Airlines reads “ke Ekid Wuche Behone Miknyat.” It translates to “due to reasons outside of planning.”
Authorities in the Tigray region have also confirmed suspension of flights. However, they did say that they do not have detailed information about it.
An anonymous Ethiopian Airlines employee has reportedly confirmed cancellations of flights to Tigray region. The source is said to have indicated that flights were cancelled “only for Thursday and flights in the the days to come will be determined by the existing situation,” refraining from disclosing the reason.
A BBC reporter from Tigray obtained information from Ethiopian Airlines branch offices which confirmed flight cancellations. It is also indicated that Employees were advised not to show up in the office.
There has been anticipation for a long time now that the TPLF would start war again over “contested areas.” The move signals confirmation that the Pretoria Agreement, which ended the two years bloody war between the TPLF led Tigray regional administration and the Federal government, is dead.

This conflict in Tigray and those in Amhara and Oromia regions that have already killed hundreds of thousands of the young make me wish the leaders of the TPLF, OLA, FANO and every decision maker in Addis/Finfinne were not even born!!!
As a sign of relief for all of us who are genuinely concerned about those upright people of Tigray, the airline has resumed flights to the region.
