Addis Ababa – Followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church on Monday celebrated Epiphany ( Timket) – the baptism of Jesus Christ in the hands of John the Baptist at the river Jordan.
In the capital Addis Ababa, Janmeda attracted millions of followers of the church. A day before the celebration, there was a procession of the Ark of the Covenant to the place of celebration followed by overnight service.
Heavy security arrangements from Federal police and Addis Ababa Police were in place. They frisked the laity at check points before they entered the premises of Janmeda.
There was mass service in the morning following overnight liturgy and rituals. The water prepared for the baptism was blessed and sprinkled to the laity with a hose.
There were celebrations in different parts of the city for dioceses that are far from Janmeda.
Outside of the capital, many colorful celebrations were organized, as has been the case for generations, in many cities.
The one in Gondar is a significant tourist attraction although there have been active travel advisories for several months including from countries like Canada due to the security situation. There has been a large-scale conflict between the Fano forces and the Federal government since August 2023.
In Gondar, Timkat is celebrated in the 16th century King Fasiledes Castle.
Recently, celebrations in places like Gambella – where it is celebrated on the shores of Openo river, are attracting a growing number of local visitors.
Timkat is a three day open air holiday. The last day of celebration is on Tuesday when the St. Michael is commemorated.
