Toronto – Chinese top diplomat Wang Yi was in Ethiopia between January 7 and January 9. According to sources, the purpose of Chinese diplomatic trips to Africa in the new year was to foster the implementation of outcomes from the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit.
In Ethiopia, Mr. Yi met Abiy Ahmed and his counterpart, Gedion Timotheos. From a joint press release following the discussions between the two foreign ministers which was made public on January 9, Ethiopia has made several reaffirmations of political and diplomatic nature.
One of the key issues highlighted in the eight points joint press release , from the Chinese point of view, was the status of Taiwan as an integral part of China. Ethiopia has reaffirmed commitment to Chinese territorial integrity.
” Ethiopia reaffirms its firm commitment to the one-China principle, and reaffirms that there is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China ; firmly opposes all forms of “Taiwan Independence” , firmly supports all efforts by the Chinese government to achieve national reunification, and resolutely defends the authority of the UNGA Resolution 2758,” the joint release reads.
On the other hand, China carefully crafted its words when it comes to Ethiopia’s access to the sea. China framed its stance in light of UN charter, international law, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries in the Horn of Africa. Yet China urged regional cooperation and “African integration” including in the areas of promoting maritime logistics.
The Chinese position in the joint press release reads ,”China attached great importance to Ethiopia’s role in the Horn of Africa. The Ethiopian side commends the results achieved under China’s outlook on Peace and Development in the Horn of Africa. On the basis of respecting the UN Charter, International Law and the Sovereignty and territorial integrity of the countries concerned, the Chinese side encourages regional countries to deepen connectivity cooperation and African integration in various fields such as promoting maritime logistics through access to the sea, through dialogue and diplomatic means for the purpose of promoting regional peace, stability and prosperity.”
Notably, China was among the countries that condemned Israel’s recognition of Somaliland – which existed as a de facto state with its own army and currency since 1991. Ethiopia has not condemned the move and there was an anticipation that it would be one of the countries that would follow suit to Israel’s action.
As to the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa outcomes, China and Ethiopia pledged for its implementation. The two countries see their bilateral relations as “all-weather” and China has plans to use it as a model for building relations with the rest of Africa.
China has been quietly building a strong economic influence in Africa, avoiding political interference and imposition of cultural values. However, it seems to have changed a policy as it is aspiring cooperation in Africa including in the areas of culture. For example one of the points highlighted in the statement was “2026 China-Africa year of people to people exchanges as an opportunity and promote people-to-people exchange for closer bongs through culture and art.”
Cooperation in Multilateral forums is another area of cooperation including in the United Nations and BRICS was also part of the discussions. Both countries reaffirmed commitment against, among other issues, the “use or threat of use of forces in international relations.” Last week, China opposed Donald Trump’s use of force in Venezuela to capture the president. President Maduro was captured hours after he held a meeting with a Chinese special envoy to the country.

Some people don’t recognize that every time they open their mouth just to please their boss, Ol’ Cap’n Cotchipee, in Beijing, they don’t realize that they are making so fool and dumb of themselves. It shows they are in complete want of the history of Taiwan. They are now telling us that Taiwan is part of commie China. If that is so, then what they make out of their recognition Eritrea as a sovereign state and the recent MOU they signed with my darling Somaliland? Boy, they know how to go knee deep into something they lack the knowledge of and create a geopolitics mess of their own making. I wish they keep their mouths shut and let people they have turned clueless horses. I would like to know what PM Abiy and his holy-rollers say about the current persecution of Christians by his bank rollers in Beijing. Let’s hear you say something about it, sir! They are being hauled away into concentration camps with their crime being only reciting the same Holy Scriptures he allegedly preaches at his church on Sundays. Man up and say something about it.
They are not alone in their shameful allegiance to the goons in Beijing. They are in the same boat with the other thug in Asmara, Al-Toweel Isu and his bloodthirsty gangsters.
