Even though Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed frequently communicates its dedication to advancing the collective interests of all Ethiopians and fulfilling its obligations on the international stage, internal observations suggest a contrasting reality.

In reality, political messages conveyed by Abiy Ahmed and other Oromo regional and federal officials frequently interweave the identity of their administration with themes of Oromo nationalism. These pronouncements consistently articulate a narrative emphasizing the supposedly historical exclusion of the Oromo populace from central power structures over extended periods.

This historical perspective, often framed as “rectifying past injustices,”serves as a cornerstone of their communication strategy, presented as a compelling argument that the current government is dedicated to safeguarding Oromo interests and has successfully reinstated their historical claim to political authority.

Consequently, there is a recurring appeal for the Oromo community to provide unwavering and robust support to the government. This call to action is strategically designed to fortify this re-established or newly secured position of influence and to avert any potential undermining or erosion of these political gains.

From a strategic standpoint, this discourse appears to be a deliberate effort to coalesce the Oromo population around the government’s political agenda. It aims to cultivate a shared sense of identity, mobilize broad-based support, and ultimately, bolster the foundational strength of the government’s power base.

Specifically, there is a predominance of individuals of Oromo descent in critical government appointments and decision-making roles. Mostly Oromo ethnic members are appointed in key federal and regional appointments. It’s also widely believed that regional leaders are often chosen for their alignment with the system’s directives,

Concurrently, messages disseminated to the domestic Oromo community are often perceived as primarily prioritizing and promoting specific Oromo communal aspirations and benefits.

This notable discrepancy between the publicly presented national image and the concentrated focus conveyed to a particular demographic segment has raised considerable questions among the wider Ethiopian public regarding foundational principles of national unity, equitable representation, and inclusive governance.

Violence Against the Amhara People deemed as Principal Oromo Enemy:

In the current raging civil war, there are numerous documented reports detailing severe acts of violence impacting various ethnic groups including ethnic Oromo. The Amhara community, in particular, is experiencing devastating consequences, with innocent civilians being subjected to egregious violence and systematic dismantling of their means of subsistence.

It is crucial to highlight compelling evidence suggesting that a substantial segment—reportedly as high as 60%—of the Oromo-speaking combatants involved in operations in the Amhara region are believed to have been conscripted into service under duress and through coercive methods.

Characterizing these coerced individuals as an “Oromo invading force,” appears to be a deliberate tactic by Abiy Ahmed to exacerbate ethnic tensions and fundamentally mischaracterize the true aspirations and intentions of the broader Oromo populace.

This attribution tragically inflames inter-ethnic animosity and distorts the authentic desires and peaceful disposition of the Oromo people, who themselves are seeking justice and substantive democratic reform.

A clear understanding of this critical distinction is paramount to mitigating further societal polarization and to accurately assigning accountability for the persistent conflict.

The long-term peace and stability of Ethiopia is currently facing significant challenges, primarily influenced by the approaches adopted by the administration under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, suggesting that his actions frequently reflect a manipulative approach towards unilateral consolidation of power.

Furthermore, there is a discernible perception that specific segments of the population, notably the Oromo community, are being utilized to advance particular political agendas.

This approach risks undermining the historical bonds of ethnic and religious coexistence that have characterized the nation for centuries, concurrently fostering societal division and cultivating sentiments of animosity, thereby posing a substantial threat to national peace and cohesion.

Calls by the International Community to Stop the Violence Against Civilians, Ignored!

The potential for severe ramifications stemming from these administrative strategies has been consistently highlighted by the international community, alongside numerous Ethiopian academics and civil society organizations. It is a matter of considerable concern that these explicit warnings and appeals appear to have been repeatedly disregarded by Abiy Ahmed’s dictatorial regime.

For instance, several months prior, the US and EU issued strong admonitions concerning indiscriminate drone strikes and the use of heavy weaponry resulting in innocent civilian casualties. Despite their clear statements, reports by reputable sources, continue to circulate widely, indicating ongoing loss of innocent lives and the perpetration of mass attacks causing massive casualties.

The persistent disregard for international warnings and the ongoing targeting of civilians by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed may has stemmed from a profound miscalculation regarding the U.S. political environment.

It’s conceivable that his leadership perceived certain shifts within the U.S. political landscape or anticipated significant administrative challenges for the incoming Donald Trump administration, perhaps fostering an assumption that a less rigorous foreign policy approach would be adopted concerning international actions.

However, such a perspective critically fails to grasp the bedrock principles that consistently guide U.S. foreign policy. These core tenets, which frequently prioritize human rights, democratic governance, and regional stability, are deeply ingrained and fundamentally transcend the ephemeral currents of domestic political transitions or the specific challenges faced by any new administration.

Relying on such transient factors for strategic decision-making demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the enduring nature and predictability of American diplomatic engagement on critical international issues.

The perceived erosion of trust and the consistent failure to uphold commitments by the Abiy Ahmed administration in its engagement with the international community are widely understood to carry significant diplomatic and political ramifications. Consequently, it is anticipated that these prevailing circumstances will inevitably incur substantial costs for its administration.

Zemene Kassie’s Powerful Message

In this critical juncture, Zemene Kassie, a prominent figure in the Fano movement, addressing the alleged existential threats faced by the Amhara people, has conveyed a pivotal message designed to de-escalate tensions and foster convergence rather than division.

Abiy Ahmed has created a nation that is faced with deepening societal divides, fueled by ethnic, religious, and socio-economic differences. On the contrary, amidst rising tensions, notably concerning animosity towards the Oromo community, Zemene Kassie, issued a positive message last week.

He clarified, Fano’s aim is solely to protect the Amhara population, not to attack or subjugate other ethnic groups. He urged for collaborative efforts among all communities to foster brotherhood, equality, and justice, stressing the importance of building alliances to secure Ethiopia’s future.

Positive discourse of this nature is instrumental in fostering constructive inter-communal relations and instilling hope amidst segments of society grappling with adversity.

The current exigency calls for a concerted effort to identify pathways to peace and cooperation, anchored in fundamental shared values that resonate with all. At a time when both the lives of citizens and the very existence of the nation are imperiled, messages and actions that pivot from division to unity, from animosity to affection, and from conflict to resolution must be accorded paramount national priority.

Conclusion:

A disconcerting trend is particularly evident in the prevalence of animosity and misperceptions directed towards the Oromo community by certain elements, gravely jeopardizing national unity and the collective multinational principles. While a number of Oromo intellectuals and community leaders have diligently striven to counteract divisive narratives, the sheer magnitude and intricacy of the challenge unequivocally necessitate a concerted national response, transcending individual endeavors.
