In today’s world, human suffering is often measured by how much attention it receives from the media. Pain that is reported is acknowledged; pain that is ignored is treated as if it does not exist. The situation of internally displaced Amhara people in Wollo and Debre Birhan is a painful reminder of this reality.
At this very moment, there are three displacement camps in Debre Birhan:
- China Camp
- Woyin Shet Camp
- Bakelo Camp
Thousands of displaced Amhara civilians are living in these camps after being forced from their homes. Their suffering is not the result of a natural disaster, but of human-made violence and instability.
The conditions inside the camps are extremely dire. Displaced families face severe shortages of clean water, making daily survival a struggle and increasing the risk of disease, especially for children and the elderly. There is also a critical lack of sanitation and hygiene materials, further worsening public health conditions.
Shelter remains another major challenge. Many displaced people do not have adequate protection from rain, cold, or heat. Access to healthcare is extremely limited, leaving the sick and injured without proper medical attention. At the same time, serious nutrition shortages are affecting vulnerable groups, particularly children, pregnant women, and the elderly.
Beyond these visible hardships, there is a critical protection issue. Displaced people live in constant fear and uncertainty, without feeling safe or secure. Trauma, anxiety, and hopelessness have become part of daily life.
Despite the scale of this humanitarian crisis, the suffering of displaced people in Debre Birhan and surrounding areas remains largely unreported and ignored. Both local and international media have failed to give these communities the attention they deserve. As a result, their voices go unheard, and their pain remains invisible to the world.
These people are not just statistics. They are human beings with names, histories, families, and dreams. Yet today, they have become forgotten souls.
Forgetting them must not become their final fate. Their suffering deserves to be seen, their voices deserve to be heard, and their dignity and rights must be restored.
