From the Afar Desert to Article 39: Ethiopia’s Dual Rift

The African continent is splitting in two. This natural process is so slow that its pace does not exceed the growth of a fingernail. In contrast, the political fracturing and identity-based tensions surfacing in Ethiopia are moving at a speed measured in the seconds and minutes it takes for conflicts to ignite. The earth, harboring an ocean in its womb, expresses its labor pains through a rift; yet we are preoccupied more with the political “turmoil” above our heads than the natural “labor” beneath our feet. Which split should concern us more? The new ocean arriving in millions of years, or the historical and legal fractures right under our noses?

The Afar Triangle: The Divergence of Three Plates

After slumbering for twelve thousand years, Mount Hayli Gubbi in the Afar region suddenly awoke, rocking the area with thunderous noise, smoke, ash, and lava. Satellites recorded its plume of smoke—vaulting like a rocket—to an altitude of 45,000 feet (13 kilometers). East-ward jet streams carried the ash across the Red Sea, Oman, and Yemen, reaching as far as India and disrupting international flights. When airplanes fly through clouds of volcanic fragments (pyroclastics) at high temperatures, the ash coats their bodies like wet cement, potentially stalling engines and causing mid-air disasters.

A similar event occurred in 2010 when the eruption of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull grounded flights across Europe. Even high-level diplomacy was affected, as then-U.S. President Barack Obama had to shorten a trip to Europe. These events demonstrate how volcanic eruptions can trigger technological and economic crises thousands of kilometers away from their source.

These eruptions occur where three tectonic plates meet: the Nubian Plate (moving Northwest), the Arabian Plate (Northeast), and the Somalian Plate (Southeast). This area has been a site of geological tension for millions of years. Consequently, the earth’s crust in Afar has thinned and fractured, allowing lava and thermal waters to bubble to the surface amidst frequent seismic tremors. 

Known as the Afar Triple Junction, this region is the result of three rifts. Over time, waters from the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean flooded two of these rifts, forming the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The third is the Great East African Rift Valley, which is currently in the slow “labor” of birthing a new sea—a process that scientists believe will eventually split the African continent.

Geological Processes and Information Distortion

The splitting of continents also carries religious perspectives. Based on Genesis 10:25, which states “the earth was divided” in the days of Peleg, some traditionally believed continents split after Noah’s flood, though modern scholars often interpret this as the dispersion of peoples. While the Quran does not explicitly mention plate tectonics, some writers relate such phenomena to the splitting of the moon mentioned in Chapter 54.

However, media information regarding East African plate movements is often shallow or exaggerated. While many Ethiopian geologists have gained international acclaim for their research, there remains a gap in communicating this complex knowledge to the domestic public in local languages. In this vacuum, social media often fills the void with misinformation. Some attempt to explain current changes in Afar using traditional knowledge but lack the deep ancestral understanding of seismic history. Consequently, false predictions emerge, forgetting that the Nile, Lake Tana, and Cairo are far from the current fracture, and that there is no such thing as a “South Sudan Plate.”

Furthermore, since volcanic temperatures reach 700°C to 1200°C, they melt everything in their path. There is no scientific possibility for bacteria or ancient artifacts to survive this heat—in volcanic lava, the memories of yesterday remain only as ash. Here, one recalls Shakespeare’s Hamlet:

“There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” Yet these mysteries are governed by nature’s laws. 

Nature has provided its own safeguards; the Danakil Horst acts as a natural dam, shielding the Red Sea from direct lava flows. This renders the fears voiced by some—that volcanic bacteria might poison the sea’s marine life—scientifically unfounded. Indeed, not a single coastal nation along the Red Sea has reported or documented such a phenomenon, exposing these claims as mere misinformation.

Global Fate and Future Predictions

The ultimate question is: how long will humanity inhabit this earth to witness such geological shifts? Even if we set aside traditional prophecies of the “Eighth Millennium” being the end of days, many religions see modern moral decay and natural upheavals as signs of an end. Science, too, points to asteroid impacts, climate change, and nuclear war as threats to our survival.

If we project Ethiopia’s political and geological map four million years into the future based on GIS based analysis, we see staggering changes. First, the Somalian Plate will break away, taking Eastern Ethiopia, Somalia, Eastern Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique into the Indian Ocean. The remaining East African nations will gain a new coastline. Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania will become “Disconnected States,” with territories on both sides of the new sea.

This split could be a “blessing in disguise” for landlocked nations like Rwanda, Uganda, and Ethiopia, granting them sovereign ports. Ethiopia would gain two vast coastlines: a western shore of 1,400 km and an eastern shore of 1,123 km, fundamentally altering its geopolitics. 

However, approximately 176,290 square km of Ethiopian land will be submerged. While parts of Afar remain as islands, significant portions of the Sidama, Southern Ethiopia, and Somali regions will be underwater. Cities like Adama, Hawassa, and Shashemene will become part of the seabed.

The Value of Traditional Knowledge

Centuries of Afar traditional knowledge regarding earthquakes and volcanoes could offer valuable insights. A similar example is found in Hawaii, where the language is so intertwined with volcanic rock that geology adopted terms like aa and pahoehoe. The term aa is said to mimic the “ah… ah…” sound of someone walking barefoot on sharp volcanic stones. In Afar, the lack of vegetation due to heat and low rainfall leaves the mountains “naked.”

“Naked mountains, standing bare; witnesses of nature, exposing the secrets of the earth.”

It is vital to remember that the continent’s split is not a sudden event. It moves no faster than the growth of a fingernail (about 20 mm per year). Since Addis Ababa was founded in 1887, the distance to Dire Dawa has only increased by about 10 meters. It will take millions of years for an ocean to form.

Nature Silenced by Political Noise

Although Ethiopia is a global laboratory for plate divergence, the most “direct and rapid” evidence of this theory emerged in the Afar desert two decades ago—coinciding exactly with the political fever of the 2005 national elections. During that time, politics consumed the media’s “oxygen.” 

When the opposition coalition (CUD) officially merged on September 24, 2005, hope was high. Yet, controversial reports of internal rifts within the opposition the following day dominated the news. While the media’s attention was fixed on the political heat, the Dabbahu volcano in Afar erupted, creating a 500-meter long, 60-meter deep fissure that stunned the global scientific community. In Ethiopia, almost no one was listening.

The Political Crust: A Different Kind of Rift

Ethiopia is stretched not only by geological tension but by an alarming political pressure layered above it. This tension may not be measured on the Richter Scale, but the identity politics that entangles ethnicity, religion, and language poses a threat to national unity that is far more immediate than any geological event. 

We might ask: are we adding ethno-political stress to mitigate the earth’s stress? As the poet Haylu Gebre Yohannes (Gemoraw) once wrote: “When your intended goal fails to materialize and the situation hardens; to loosen the hard, tighten that which is loose.” (“ያሰብከው ዓላማ አልሆን ብሎ ሲከሽፍ፣ ሁኔታው ሲጠጥር፤ ጠጣሩ እንዲላላ የላላውን ወጥር።“)

Many argue the source of this political mess lies within the current constitutional structure. Article 39 of the 1995 Constitution, which grants the “unconditional” right to secession for nations and nationalities, generates an ethno-political energy focused outward (secession) rather than inward (integration). This has left the country in a state of perpetual tension. To borrow Abraham Lincoln’s famous words:

“A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Unless this trend is corrected, while it takes millions of years for a geological rift to split a continent, an ethno-political rift could dismantle a nation in just a few years. 

Today, territorial claims between regions and zones are not just increasing; they are inciting conflict. Behind every newly formed region or zone lies bitter social tension and, too often, bloodshed. Terms like “genocide,” once found only in history books, are becoming tragically common in legal filings across Tigray, Oromia, Amhara, Somali, and other regions. When regions begin issuing statements as if they were sovereign states, one does not need a GPS to see where the path of national unity is heading.

Historically, boundaries between communities were not rigid lines but flexible “frontiers.” The rigid boundaries drawn by Europeans across Africa—now used as models for Ethiopian regional structures—contradict this natural law of transition.

Conclusion: The Trial of the Dual Rift

Ethiopia is a global symbol of the dual rift—natural and man-made. The separation of the earth is a natural process written in stone; the political split is written on legal tablets and can be changed by human choice. As Leonardo da Vinci said, “Nature never breaks her own laws.” Therefore, we should not fear the slow continental drift of millions of years, but the rapid ethno-political danger under our feet today. A rift drawn in stone is ‘history’; a rift drawn in the heart is a ‘fracture.’

To ease this ethno-political fracture, national projects like the Grand Renaissance Dam can act as a unifying thread, but lasting results will only come when the constitutional framework opens its doors to reform. Reform means birthing a “Golden Mean” between extremes, rather than replacing one extreme with another. As Aristotle said: 

“Virtue is the golden mean between two vices, the one of excess and the other of deficiency.”

For an Ethiopian to worry about the geological split of East Africa might seem like hypocrisy given the timescale. Instead, we must focus on saving our social fabric—woven together like warp and weft—from the dangers of division we are creating ourselves. 

Ethiopia’s fate will be decided not by taming volcanoes, but through a firm constitutional covenant and a shared national dream. While we leave the geological rift to nature and the separation to time, the duty of stitching our hearts together with the needle of love and the thread of a common dream remains ours alone.
