Toronto – Followers of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church have been experiencing massacre in Arsi, Oromia region of Ethiopia.

The story has been making news headlines from Ethiopian media outlets, including borkena, and activists.

The matter is getting some advocacy in the United States.

Congressman Buddy Carter, Representative for Georgia’s 1st congressional district, on Tuesday announced that he has introduced a  “resolution condemning the Ethiopian government for its many human rights violations, including the persecution of Christians, and urging the Secretary of State to use all available diplomatic tools to protect innocent civilians against their abusive, corrupt government.”

From the Press release shared in the U.S. Government  website, he is looking into the matter through a human rights advocacy lens including the right to worship. But he also expressed belief that the development in Ethiopia “undermine the strategic interests of the United States in the Horn of Africa.”

He is quoted as saying  “Practicing your Christian faith is not a crime. Terrorists are running Ethiopia into the ground, and with it the lives of countless innocent people, particularly religious minorities. From intimidation to famine and genocide, the Ethiopian government has given the United States no option but to limit their power by using every tool available to hold them accountable for these, and many other, abuses.”

Two Ethiopian advocacy organizations in the United States namely  Amhara Association in Georgia and the American Ethiopian Public Affairs Committee have been rallying support for the resolution.

There have been recurring attacks on followers of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians in different parts of Oromia region. However, the massacre in Arsi has been relentless.

Over 200 followers of the church are reportedly killed in less than two months in Merti and Sherka districts of Arsi, Oromia region of Ethiopia.

The massacre is linked to a militant group operating in the region. Gov’t calls is “shane.” But the group calls itself as “Oromo Liberation Army.”

Ethiopian activists alleged that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government made the recurring massacre of Orthodox Christians possible in the region. Some went to the extent of questioning if the government itself was not involved in the massacre indirectly through the agency of armed groups.

  1. A Tigray intelligence source says that the killings are committed by the Abiy Ahmed`s extremist wing of Islamic Oromia group that is operating and gaining ground in Arsi and western Hararge. The EPRDF government used to enforce effective control over this extermist group

    • So-called Eprdf was itself a cover for an extremist mafia group known by the initials t.p.l.f. You must be the digital version of that.
