Toronto – The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) on Tuesday announced schedules for the 7th general election that will take place on June 1st, 2026.
Candidates registration is starting on January 9 and the last day for it is February 8. The schedule for voter registration is between February 14 and March 16.
Political parties have about five months to undertake campaigns. This activity is scheduled between January 9 and May 27.
Monday June 1st 2026 is the voting day and the official result announcement day is on June 11, 2026 – according to the Board announced on its social media page.
Major Ethiopian opposition parties in the country have been disclosing a precondition for participation in the general election as the ruling party intensifies repression against opposition parties.
Several politicians, including three parliamentarians , have been thrown in jail for several years now. Opposition parties – including the recently formed Coalition for Ethiopian Unity – have been calling for their release and an end to crackdown on the free press.
Among the major reasons why they point out that there is no enabling environment in the country for the election is that the government has been prohibiting activities relevant for opposition parties to mobilize support including meetings and peaceful rallies.
Last Week, the EPRP organized a public meeting for Saturday in the capital with the motto “Let Addis Ababa Speak” but it was cancelled in the eleventh hour after Hotel d’ Afrique cancelled its booking refunding the deposit paid for it.
Outside of the capital, conflicts are going on in the Amhara and Oromia regions. The Fano forces in the Amhara region still claim to be in control of many many districts and rural town,
Similarly, the militant group that calls itself Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) has been waging an extensive insurgency in the Oromia region obstructing government activities in many rural areas and small towns. Merera Gudina, deputy chairman of the Oromo Federalist Congress, recently told BBC that his party will not be fielding candidates in the region. “There are no enabling conditions for the election,” he is cited as saying. In a move to bypass electoral board rules that opposition parties that did not take part in election for two consecutive elections will lose their legal status as opposition parties, the party is planning to field about 10 candidates in the capital Addis Ababa outside of the region.
However, the Electoral Board claims that it is relentlessly working towards the 7th general election.
