WTTASA Calls for Justice and Warns of Renewed Threats from TPLF on Genocide Commemoration Day

Welqait Tegede Tellemt Amhara Scholars’ Association (WTTASA)
PRESS RELEASE

Today marks the Tenth Anniversary of the International Day of Commemoration and dignity of victims of the crime of Genocide and of the prevention of this Crime. On this important day, WTTASA honors the victim and survivors of genocide and reaffirms that justice and accountability are essential to ensure sustainable peace. Crime perpetrators must be held accountable and innocent civilians must receive full recognition and dignity. This day serves as a solemn reminder that acknowledging past atrocities is essential to preventing their recurrence.

In Ethiopia, the Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) committed severe crimes against Welqait Tegede Tellemt Amhara People during its three decades in power. Genocide, ethnic cleansing; war crime and crime against humanity were carried out on deliberate attempt to destroy the community and remove them from their homeland. Tens of thousand of Amharas were brutally killed and hundreds of thousands were forcefully displaced from their livelihood. In addition, persecution, arbitrary detention, torture, and the suppression or alteration of cultural and administrative identities were committed on our people.

More than twelve mass graves exist in Welqait Tegede Tellemt as a result of these mass killings and barbaric acts of torture by TPLF forces. These include sites such as Humera Hospital, Minniminnie, Ghinib, Tirkan Humera Airport, Dejena, Wofarigif, and Maikadra. We urgently demand an independent and thorough investigation so that justice can be delivered to our people and full accountability can be achieved.

On November 9, 2020, in Welqait Tegede Setit Humera Zone, 1564 civilians were killed and only 81 survived the atrocities committed by TPLF militia supported by an armed youth group known as Samre in Maikadra. This tragic event stands as a painful reminder of the brutality inflicted on the Welqait Tegede Tellemt Amhara people.

WTTASA expresses grave concern over credible reports and observed mobilization patterns suggesting that the TPLF may be preparing for renewed armed conflict. Such developments could undermine the Pretoria Peace Agreement, the stabilization efforts, put thousands of civilians at risk of displacement or harm, trigger a humanitarian crisis, and expose responsible actors to international criminal liability.

The Association urges the international community to support independent investigations, promote effective accountability mechanisms, publicly oppose any renewed aggression or destabilization by TPLF, strengthen early-warning systems and monitoring missions, to ensure protection of civilians.

As we commemorate this day, we reaffirm our commitment to prevent genocide, ensure accountability, and protect communities from future harm. We remain determined to contribute to peace building and regional stability, guided by the belief that justice and truth are the foundation of lasting peace.
