Toronto – Gunmen on Wednesday reportedly killed Attorny in Jima Ardo district of East Wollega zone, Oromia region of Ethiopia.
The victim is identified as Negesse Kebede.
Five others including a driver were abducted, BBC Amharic reported on Thursday citing Oromia region association of Prosecutors.
A person who spoke to the source on condition of anonymity for security reasons is cited as saying that the incident occurred on Wednesday in the afternoon.
They reportedly came under attack as they were heading to Jimma for a work- related trip.
The person who spoke on anonymous condition is quoted as saying “Having completed their work they were heading back to Nekemte, passing Bedele, when the gunmen stopped their car on Wednesday around 9 [‘3:00 p.m. local time] and abducted them. That is what we heard.”
The motivation of the killing is unspecified.
Based on the report, the individuals did not have political participation at any level. The anonymous person, who appears to be a legal professional working in the Oromia office of the Attorney General, is cited as saying the legal professionals were targeted inappropriately as they are not members of political parties.
No remark is given why Negesse Kebede is killed while the gunmen decide to abduct others. The body was reportedly taken to Addis Ababa and a funeral is arranged for Friday.
The BBC reported that those abducted are said to be in good condition but it is unclear if there is a good chance they will be released or if the abductors are asking for ransom.
The gunmen are reported to be what the government calls Shane – a militant ethnic nationalist group that calls itself Oromo Liberation Army.
The group has been linked to many kidnappings, massacres and assassinations in the Oromia region. OLA has been saying at different times that “it does not target civilians.”
