Toronto – The viral video footage showing the hands of a young man being cruelly cut with an ax after the hand is placed in a rock has been a talking point among Ethiopians on social media.

The incident took place in Woreilu, South Wollo, Amhara region this week.

Initially, pro-government cadres projected an image as if Fano forces were behind the cruelty.

Days later , several photographs emerged on social media purportedly showing the gunman who carried out the attack was claiming to be a member of Fano while working for the government.

According to social media reports, he surrendered to the government several days before the incident.

In one of the pictures that emerged on social media, the man who chopped the hand of a young man is seen seating a senior Ethiopian Defense Force commander, whose name is unspecified.

Fano and pro-fano elements are making claims that government intelligence operatives set up the incident with the aim to tarnish the image of Fano forces and deny them the massive grass root support they have been enjoying in the Amhara region over the past two and half years.

Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) has released a statement in reaction to the incident.

“Recently a video footage was seen where a human hand was chopped of with an ax. Whoever carried it out, the Amhara Fano National Force strongly condemn it. It is a shameful act that should never have occurred,” it said.

It made a reference to  recent acts of cruelty in the region which it linked to the “defense force.”

AFNF said it has demonstrated the extent of its commitment for international law by taking good care of captives. It alleges the recent incident represents a character assassinaton campaign against Fano forces.

Furthermore, it stated that the move will not “confuse our people as they know our ethical deeds.”

It called on the international community to condemn the incident and for an independent body to investigate the incident.
