Toronto – Singaporean PM Lawrence Wong is in Ethiopia for a working visit. He arrived on Sunday in the evening, and was greeted by the Ethiopian Prime Minister upon arrival at Bole International Airport.
“This visit marks an important step in strengthening our partnership,” Abiy Ahmed remarked.
An official state reception ceremony was organized at the Emperor Haile Selassie’s Jubille Palace, not very far from Emperor Menelik II’s palace in Arat kilo.
On Monday, the leaders held a meeting and a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen relations and cooperation in certain areas was signed.
The two countries have 35 years of diplomatic ties, as PM Lawrence Wong pointed out during the joint presser after the meeting with Abiy. And Singapore opened its first embassy in the region in Ethiopia. The Prime Minister inaugurated it.
“We see Ethiopia as an ancient civilization, with a long and proud history, diverse people, and tremendous potential,” PM Lawrence added.
The two countries have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen their relationship.
The two countries expressed “commitment to building resilient, future-ready workforces and advancing sustainable, low-carbon growth.”
Abiy Ahmed expressed interest in partnership “…through further practical cooperation, expanding trade and investment, developing smart transport and logistics, and strengthening collaboration in digital infrastructure, fintech, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.”
For Singaporean PM Cooperation in skills development and Carbon Credits collaborations seems to be practical areas of cooperation.
Notably, the Ethiopian PM and his delegation visited Singapore in 2024 to “explore opportunities for deepening economic cooperation, strengthening institutional partnerships, and advancing shared priorities.”

Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan are most darling nations. All three nations changed themselves from pleasure providing destinations for soldiers on their breaks to booming industrial countries right in front of my eyes. They did not mumble and jumble with ‘Down Imperialism’ like what our intellectuals were opening their big mouth with in the 1960’s and 70’s. In stead all these nations behaved and absorbed every technology imaginable like a sponge. Singapore transformed itself from a coal loading station for merchant ships into building them on its own. South Korea changed itself from an importer of used cars into making cars domestically itself. Now you can’t wait to put your hands on that Hyundai or Kia latest model. Then we have Taiwan my darling of all. If any African nation wants to learn from others, these three will be it.
All three nations were sending their students to various higher learning institutions in the West and went back loaded with the intellectual horsepower to their eagerly waiting countries. Our late Emperor did the same sending thousands with full scholarships but ours were breathing their dragon breath with polemic chicken scratches like ‘Some Notes ob Western Imperialism in Ethiopia’ and one of them had the nerve to denounce the very country it was educating him. Ours chose to go on a journey to unite ‘a proletariat’ that did not exist. They vowed to establish a ‘socialist state’ on overflowing septic tank. Don’t start me with ours.
Make that: Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan are my most darling nations.
The relationship between Singapore and Ethiopia did not just drop from the sky now. It goes back to 1968 when Singapore was just 3 years old and struggling to be noticed. The late Emperor Haile Selassie was the one that bestowed the recognition to that tiny island nation. I remember watching the news reel about his visit there as a young boy. The late Emperor should be given the recognition he deserves.
Dear countrymen/countrywomen,
Over the years, you have heard me calling the country that produced us all, Ethiopia, a gem of the colored. When I said that, I undoubtedly meant it. I did not just dream about it and woke up one day and start hallucinating with it. Not at all. It is rather etched in stone in the history of mankind. I am not alone in that assertion. I have more than 2 billion world citizens that back me up in my calling the old country Ethiopia the gem of the colored. It is revered in the Holy Scriptures. You need modern day evidence? Just watch and listen to what the leader of Malaysia is gushing with passion about Ethiopia.

He is not alone saying this but he is joined by more than 2 billion Muslims around the world including those in remote villages in Indonesia, the Philippines and steppes of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and even in the slums and ghettos of Egypt(those superpower wannabes in Al-Qahirah notwithstanding).
