Toronto – The Government of Canada has updated travel advisory on Ethiopia on November 14 as reports of protest are coming from private media outlets based in the Diaspora.
The growing tension between Ethiopia and Eritrea, and its unpredictability seems to be an additional matter of concern from a security point of view.
While the Canadian government is advising citizens to avoid non-essential trips to Ethiopia, there are the parts of Ethiopia where travel should be avoided.
“Avoid non-essential travel to Ethiopia due to civil unrest, violence, armed conflict and crime. The security situation can deteriorate without warning,” it said in its latest travel advisory update.
The capital Addis Ababa is identified as a place where “a high degree of caution” should be exercised. Apart from rising crime, the government of Canada tends to see “spontaneous demonstrations” that could escalate to the point of violence.
It also tends to see that the conflict in the country (in Amhara and Oromia region) could spread to the capital.
Furthermore, the Northern, central and border regions are areas where travel should be avoided.
The Canada travel advisory listed Amhara, Benishangul and Tigray under the Northern region. However, Benishangul is on the west rather than north.
Ongoing armed conflict, potential civil unrest and unpredictable security situations are highlighted as reasons why travel to the north should be avoided.
Notably, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) – which fought one of the most bloody wars in the history of the country between 2020 and 2022 against the Federal government – has recently been making incursions to the northern parts of the Afar region risking another major war.
There are confirmed reports that the Federal government forces responded to it with a drone strike. The TPLF has confirmed the strike and unspecified number of casualties.
The active conflict in the Amhara region of Ethiopia which has been going on for about two and half years is also cited as a reason for avoiding conflict in the North region.
No recent report of active conflict in Benhishandgul which the travel advisory identified as one of the regions to avoid travel.
In central Ethiopia, Gambella (rather south west) , Sidama, North Shewa,West Shewa, West Wollega, East Wollega, Kellem Wollega,Horo Gudru Wollega are in the “avoid travel” list due to violent crime, kidnapping, armed conflict, and civil unrest. In this part of the country, the advisory tends to see airstrikes but most of the recorded air strikes and drone strikes have been in the Amhara regions.
The border area to Eritrea, Somalia and Kenya area “avoid travel” zones. In this parts of the country, “instability, military activity, banditry, the high risk of terrorist attacks, kidnapping, violence and landmines” are cited as reasons.
