Toronto – Amsalu Kassaw, Ethiopian born Aurora City Councilor (Republican) on Monday announced that he has contacted President Donald Trump’s Special Assistant Christine over the massacre Orthodox Christians in Arsi, Oromia region of Ethiopia.
“Many citizens have been contacting me via phone and mail condemning the killings in Arsi Ethiopia which targeted “Christian faith” and ethnicity, and urging an investigation into it. I would like to announce that I have presented the complaints to President Trump’s Assistant Christine Serano,” he wrote on his social media page.
Notably, President Trump recently shared a firm statement in response to reported killings of Christians in Nigeria and threatened to send an army if the government of Nigeria is failing to protect Christians.
Amsalu expressed his stance against the killings of Christians in Arsi.
“…Targeting people because f [of] their faith and ethnicity is unacceptable…” he wrote in a public statement he shared on his Facebook page.
Well over 25 Ethiopian Orthodox Christians were massacred in the latest strings of massacre in Arsi, the Oromia region of Ethiopia.
However, in its first report into the investigation of the massacre the Inter Religious Council Of Ethiopia on Monday claimed that the killing “did not target the followers and clerics of one religion.” The council is believed to have a partisan stance to the ruling Prosperity Party.
The tension between Ethiopia and Eritrea is another issue that is highlighted in his statement reflecting anti-war stance.
He wrote, ” I have contacted President Trump’s Special Advisor directly to bring attention to this crisis, including the increacing [increasing] tension between Ethiopia and Eritrea. Diplomacy must lead – not war.”
He also urged the international community to “act now.”
Amsalu Kassaw was appointed as councilor in December 2024 and expected to run for re-election in for an at-large seat of the Aurora City Council in Colorado next month.
