Toronto – At least five followers of Ethiopian Orthodox Church are killed on Monday in Merti district of Arsi, Oromia regional state.
They were killed after they were tasked to harvest teff farms for militia forces in Arsi.
Three others whose whereabouts were unknown from the previous attack are reportedly found dead. Authorities from the area whom the Borkena reporter in Addis spoke to, via phone, confirmed the story.
They were killed by the gunmen who appeared to have launched the massacre last week. Two of the victims were husband and wife and one was a neighbour. They will be laid to rest on Thursday, according to sources from the area.
In a related development, the leg of the child who miraculously survived from last week’s attack is amputated in hospital with a medical decision from doctors in Wolaita. His picture has been trending in social media among Ethiopian users.
Last week, twenty five orthodox Christians were massacred. The number of Orthodox Christians killed in the month of October this year has reached 33. In Sherka district of Arsi, about 144 Orthodox Christians have been killed since September this year.
On the other hand Oromia region Arsi zone administration has been denying that “no one was killed.” The region’s police are claiming there is no security problem in the area. It described it as “peace.”
The claim from authorities has triggered a movement on social media.
A member of the zone’s diocese of Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church told borkena that 200 believers had been killed over the past few years in Merti district.
