Why the Victory of Fano Appears Inevitable: A Lesson from the Historical Fano

Fano _ Ethiopian Politics

Ethiopia’s history is written in the blood of those who fought for its freedom. From the sands of Adwa to the hills of Mekelle, the nation’s sovereignty has been secured by the unwavering resolve of its people. Today, a new chapter is being written, and the name on every lip is Fano.

Much more than a militia, Fano is the spiritual successor to a long tradition of popular resistance. Just as the peasant Fano of the Italian occupation era triumphed through grit and guerrilla warfare, the modern Amhara Fano movement, born from the protests of 2016-2018, carries the same fire. It has emerged as a decentralized force defending Amhara dignity and, crucially, the ideal of a unified Ethiopia.

While the outcome of any conflict is uncertain, a look at the patterns of history suggests that Fano’s victory is not just possible, but increasingly probable. Here is why history’s secret formula seems to be on its side.

  1. The Unbeatable Asset: A Just Cause

The greatest army in the world cannot long defeat an idea whose time has come. The central pillar of Fano’s strength is not its arsenal, but its cause. The movement is rooted in a demand for an end to the systemic oppression of the Amhara people and a halt to the perceived balkanization of Ethiopia under the current ethnic federalist system.

This is not a narrow, ethnic struggle. For its supporters, the defense of Amhara is synonymous with the defense of Ethiopian national identity. This broader appeal creates a moral and political foundation that can unite people beyond one ethnic group, mirroring the unifying spirit of past resistance movements. History consistently shows that when a people fight for their dignity and survival, they carry a strategic advantage no enemy can calculate.

  1. The Strategic Weapon: Relentless Persistence

Recall the Fano of the 1930s. They did not defeat the Italian war machine in a single, set-piece battle. They won by refusing to be defeated. Through constant harassment, strategic retreats, and making every inch of ground costly for the occupier, they persisted until the global geopolitical landscape shifted, bringing in Allied forces to tip the scales.

Today’s Fano employs the same doctrine. Its year-long insurgency, marked by the capture of towns like Gashena and control of key rural areas, demonstrates a resilience that has stretched the federal government’s forces thin. This persistence has a dual effect: it erodes the enemy’s will while internationalizing the conflict. As the war of attrition continues, it draws the attention of regional powers, whether it is Eritrea’s ambitions or Egypt’s regional calculations. Endurance, as in WWII, can create its own alliances.

  1. The Grand Vision: A Fight for Ethiopia’s Soul

While born from the urgent need for Amhara self-preservation, Fano’s stated mission transcends it. The motto, “Our starting point is Amhara, our end point is Ethiopia,” elevates its struggle to a national level. It positions Fano not merely as a defender of one region, but as the vanguard against the forces of disintegration, such as the OLA and the remnants of the TPLF.

By framing its fight as one for the soul and unity of the Ethiopian state against the Prosperity Party’s rule, Fano opens the door to broader national alliances. This vision of national salvation, much like that of the emperors and patriots of old, is what turns a regional conflict into a national movement and cements its legitimacy in the eyes of history.

The Critical Challenge: Forging Unity from Decentralization

This is the lesson Fano must learn from its own history. The historical Fano succeeded through a collective, if sometimes messy, resolve. The current movement’s greatest vulnerability is its decentralized nature. Internal factions and disagreements over leadership and strategy, particularly concerning disputed territories, can be exploited by their adversaries.

To secure victory, Fano must transcend individual ambitions and forge a unified political and military command. The selflessness that characterized their forefathers-who subordinated personal glory for the shared goal of liberation-is not a romantic ideal but a strategic necessity. Overcoming this internal challenge is the key to transforming from a potent resistance force into an unstoppable one.

Conclusion: The Inevitability of a People’s Will

The victory of Fano is not predetermined, but the conditions for it are firmly in place. A just cause, demonstrated persistence, the ongoing project of unity, and a national vision create a powerful vector pointing toward success. History’s secret is clear: when a people rise with right on their side and refuse to kneel, they become impossible to rule.

As Fano controls vast swathes of the Amhara region, the echoes of 1941 grow louder. The question is no longer if Fano can challenge the status quo, but how it is inevitable reshaping of the political landscape will define the future of Ethiopia. The ancestors’ blood, spilled for freedom, demands nothing less.
