Toronto – Ethiopia’s former female Deputy Prime Minister, Aster Mamo, and Bertukan Ayano, State Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador , are reportedly seeking political asylum in the United States.

Citizen reports on social media indicate that Aster Mamo – who used to be one of the top figures in Oromo People’s Democratic Organization (OPDO) which later evolved into the Prosperity Party in two stages under the leadership of Abiy Ahmed – is filing applications in  Minnesota.

Bertukan  Ayaho has been serving as state minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until very recently. In April this year, Berhanu Tsegaye, who was serving as Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Djibouti, took over her position.

Before that, she served as Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Canada between 2013 and 2017.

A report from Anchor media indicates that she was allegedly involved in a grand corruption scandal in the appointment of officials in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

However, there is an indication that she was involved in a political activity against the Abiy Ahmed’s political  group. .

It is not clear where Bertukan is filing her asylum application.

At the time of this writing, the Ethiopian government has not remarked why these top level government officials left government.
