Toronto – OLF Sha’ne ( Oromo Liberation Army as it calls itself), a militant ethnic Oromo nationalist group mostly operating in the Oromia region of Ethiopia, had reportedly carried out transregional attack.
According to sources, it attacked two government offices in Berber town Metekel, Debate district of Benisahngul Gumuz region.
According to a BBC Amharic report, this attack is for the second time in less than three months.
Residents from the area linked the attack to OLF Sha’ne which is operating in the region. The rebels carried out the attack on Friday night.
Mengistu Yadessa, head of the municipality Municipality office of the town, is cited as saying that a public office complex housing multiple government offices is blazed.
The office was housing administration, police chief office, ruling prosperity party office and a court.
BBC Amharic, citing government sources, reported that the office is over 40 years old. Documents and shelves are destroyed. Authorities say that damage will make service delivery impossible.
It is indicated in the report that there was a Federal police force camp nearby (distance unspecified) but they reportedly arrived on the scene after the incident.
However, the police forces launched an operation after the incident. It is reported that the gunmen managed to escape. No reports of human causality.
At the time of this writing, OLA did not confirm or deny the attack in Benishangul Gumuz region.
The group has been linked to civilian killings and recurring kidnappings across the Oromia region. Last week, it was also linked to an attack on parts of ethnic Guraghe zone in the Central Ethiopia region neighboring the Oromia region of Ethiopia.
