Toronto – Amhara Fano National Force (AFNF) on Thursday announced that it has attacked government forces. Over 130 reported to be killed or wounded.
It was the Menelik Command of AFNF that carried out the attack in Habru District of North Wollo. Based on the disclosure, the Fano operation was a conventional one unlike erstwhile operations which were mostly guerilla fighting and ambush attacks.
“86 government soldiers were dropped like leaves and over 45 were wounded,” the statement from AFNF said. Fano has not specified if there were casualties on its part.
It was “Bale Shertu:” division of the Menelik Command that was behind the operation in Habru Ligo and Wilaguba localities of the district.
It is also reported that Fano forces has also gained extensive areas of military significance.
Fano forces were said to have a comparative advantage of the combat landscape and locality very well – something government forces lacked.
Over the past three days, several Ethiopian news outlets with connection to the Amhara region of Ethiopia reported that the Defense Force has been deploying more reinforcements to the area following a devastating military loss in the Beklo Manekia area of the North Wollo.
The Ethiopian government has been alleging the Eritrean government and Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) were involved in the operation near Beklo Mankia. Fano has dismissed the allegation as a “lie.”
Notable opposition figures like Lidetu Ayalew, whom the Ethiopian government barred from returning to Ethiopia from the United States, remarked during a recent interview with a pro-TPLF media, Zara Media, “I do not have information about their involvement.” He attributed Fano’s significant military gain to the growing military capability of Fano forces.
In the North West, Fano forces have also carried out operations in West Gondar Methema district. It claimed a significant military victory but the number of victims from the operation was unspecified.
However, they accused the government of shelling a school after suffering defeats. Fano forces also allege that government forces have massacred 12 civilians in Central Gondar Alfa Takusa district. The attack was carried out in places of worship where patients were taking Holy Water healing baptism.
Fano forces are vowing to escalate operations against government forces.
On the other hand, the Defense Force is claiming that “it has taken action on extremist forces” in the East Gojjam zone of the Amhara region.
