Toronto – Senior U.S. Embassy officials have met with leaders of the new Ethiopian opposition coalition – Coalition for Ethiopian Unity, borkena has learned.
The coalition was officially launched last Saturday. And this is the Coalition’s first engagement with the diplomatic community in Addis Ababa.
The meeting with the Embassy took place at the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP), one of the members of the coalition.
Abraham Getu, chairperson , and Mistre Selassie Tamerat, secretary, have briefed the U.S. embassy officials on a range of current affair issues and the coalition.
The discussion is described as “extensive.”
The parties that have formed the coalition have been collaborating for several years in their advocacy work. They have also announced readiness for openness to work with any political entity which has a conviction that Ethiopia is facing an existential threat.
The coalition explicitly links the unprecedented economic crisis in the country with the ruling Prosperity Party’s reckless policies and incompetence.
It has also announced that one of its priorities is advocacy for political prisoners, and has called for their unconditional releases.
The five political parties that formed the coalition are Enat Party, Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party, All Ethiopian Unity Party, One Ethiopia Democratic Party, and Amhara Ghionawi Movement.
While the coalition is formed ahead of the 7th general election in the country, it has made it clear that it will not take part if there are no enabling environments.
The ruling “prosperity party,” which appears to be getting multifaceted support including from multilateral monetary institutions, has recently been intensifying crackdown on journalists. Notably, dozens of politicians are behind bars.
The U.S. embassy has not released a statement or news update regarding the meeting with Coalition For Ethiopian Unity opposition leaders.

This is good and encouraging sign. It shows once for all that USA is committed for the unity of that country. I hope other scattered and fragmented opposition groups will take a good note of this and start creating unions leading into single parties. Such newly formed unions should never be based exclusively on ethnic lines. Enough of that already. That country desperately needs to be a nation of two strong political parties. Now, this new united political group has a huge work cut out for it. It has to show us its objectives in detail without delay in a political and economic program. Its program must be devoid of divisive phrases such as ‘class this, class that’ and ‘oppressed and oppressor that’ borrowed from the demonic programs of Lenin and Mao. If I find even one such phrase in their program, I am gonna immediately withdraw my support. For now, I wish this new united group continued success leading to a cohesive one party.
The country needs a merger of fragmented opposition groups/parties under one party program, not a coalition of spinless so called political parties/groups. Other tried before and it didn’t work. The mergers will give the country a viable multiparty system that can address increased polarization, de-escalate political tribalism, and better represent diverse ideologies. The country also desperately needs a new culture that allows diverse ideologies to be expressed freely and listen to each other and learn from each other. It is not that hard and good for a change. Hope to witness these changes in my lifetime!!

Another laughable situation, it sounds very promising when you see a world like opposition coalition :) but when you check deep inside, they all not qualified, not even close by everything. Nation building can’t be handled by such pre computer era activists… filled with hate for fellow Ethiopians in different regions. People should know that such moves by the west is indirect response to current Ethiopian government who is working very closely with the East. Not only working with the East but also signed lots of cooperation in different sectors and the west must scare the king… but it will not work…. The king is very strong and unpredictable; all must understand that… you can only win by peace! Edegmewalew only by peace :)
