Toronto – Five major opposition parties operating in Ethiopia on Thursday announced that they formed a coalition.

The parties have been collaborating for several years now and the new agreement is meant to “give a legal shape to their collaboration,” as described by the parties.

The parties that formed the coalition are Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP), All Ethiopian Unity Party (AEUP), Amhara Giyonawi Movement (AGM), Enat party and One Ethiopia Democratic Party (OEDP).  The new coalition will be named as “coalition for Ethiopian Unity.”

Most of them mostly operate from the capital Addis Ababa with a significant presence in other parts of Ethiopia.

Megabi Abraham Haymanot, EPRP president, who spoke to Ethiopian Media Service (EMS) on the phone mentioned that the coalition may or may not enter the election.

They have been critical of the ruling prosperity party government on a range of issues including the security crisis, conflict in the Amhara and Oromia regions of Ethiopia, human rights violations and crackdown on press freedom, and the spiralling cost of living in the country, among other issues.

The parties have organized a press conference on Saturday to formally announce the formation of the coalition and unveil their logo. The people have been waiting for the coalition of the parties to do meaningful work, they said.

“We have been working collaboratively in the past few year,” the coalition added.  It is also highlighted that the parties have been working on conditions to formalize their coalition.

The number of opposition parties in the country has reached 70, and the parties see their move as having the motive to cut down the number, create a capacity, according to the Enat party.

Getenet Kebede, Public relation of Enat party, is cited as saying the purpose of their coalition is also to make “genuine struggle and cut down the high number of opposition parties which has created danger for the people.”

Ethiopia will be holding its seventh general election this year.

  1. This is good news and encouraging sign. Let’s wish the new coalition success and hope that the coalition will last and lead even to becoming a single party. Let’s all also hope that other opposition groups will come into coalition groups leading to cohesive parties. Coalitions along ethnic lines should always be discouraged and even ignored. It is a metastatic cancer that has been eating at the heart of that country since the demonic philosophy of the commies sat foot there in the 1960’s.

  2. This is good and encouraging sign. It shows once for all that USA is committed for the unity of that country. I hope other scattered and fragmented opposition groups will take a good note of this and start creating unions leading into single parties. Such newly formed unions should never be based exclusively on ethnic lines. Enough of that already. That country desperately needs to be a nation of two strong political parties. Now, this new united political group has a huge work cut out for it. It has to show us its objectives in detail without delay in a political and economic program. Its program must be devoid of divisive phrases such as ‘class this, class that’ and ‘oppressed and oppressor that’ borrowed from the demonic programs of Lenin and Mao. If I find even one such phrase in their program, I am gonna immediately withdraw my support. For now, I wish this new united group continued success leading to a cohesive one party.
