An international social media campaign is gaining momentum, calling for the release of Christian Tadelle, a member of Ethiopia’s House of Peoples’ Representatives. The movement, active across platforms including Facebook, X (Twitter), TikTok, Telegram, YouTube, and Change.org, is drawing attention to his worsening health and the reported human rights abuses he is enduring while in detention.
Mr. Christian, who represented the National Movement of Amhara (NAMA), was arrested after a state of emergency was declared in the Amhara region and has been in detention for two years. His parliamentary immunity was stripped while he was in custody.
Serious Health Concerns Prompt Urgent Calls for Release
According to his family and lawyer, Mr. Christian’s health has become a critical concern. His lawyer, Solomon Gezahegn, told the BBC that when he visited Mr. Christian at the Kilinto prison, he found him to be seriously ill and weak. The lawyer stated that his condition is worsening, in part due to a recent surgery he underwent. He claims that Mr. Christian did not receive adequate post-operative care and was returned to prison prematurely, which has contributed to his current state.
A family member, who wished to remain anonymous, echoed these concerns, stating that Mr. Christian had surgery at Mekrez Hospital months ago. They claim that he was not given proper follow-up care and that the prison has denied him access to special foods, like “atmit” (porridge) that were recommended by his doctors and approved by the court. The family says they have been turned away multiple times while trying to deliver these essential items. They also reported facing harassment and difficulty when attempting to visit Mr. Christian and other imprisoned members of parliament.
The family member stated, “He is very sick; he cannot even stand properly to talk to us.” They are calling on human rights organizations to visit the prisoners, whom they believe are victims of human rights abuses.
Legal proceedings and allegations
Mr. Christian was charged with violating criminal and anti-terrorism laws, as well as a weapons control and administration proclamation. The prosecution began presenting its witnesses in his case, which is being heard in court. The next hearing is scheduled for October 20, 2025.
The social media campaign, with the hashtag #FreeChristianTadelle, is urging the international community and human rights organizations to put pressure on the Ethiopian government to ensure Mr. Christian receives proper medical attention and a fair legal process. The campaign argues that his prolonged detention and the reported lack of care are a violation of his fundamental human rights.
The campaign continues to gain momentum as more people learn about his case and the conditions of his imprisonment. The calls for his release are growing louder, as activists and supporters demand that his health and well-being be prioritized.
