Toronto –  “We are ready for anything including war,” Tadesse Worede, President of Tigray Region Interim Administration, said this week, sending a clear signal that his relation with the federal government is on a collision course.

In an interview with Demtsi Woyane Television this week, he explicitly said the Interim Administration relation with the Federal government is not positive.

“If the worst comes from the Federal government, we are ready,” he said.  He elaborated his position saying preparing for the worst case scenario does not mean that we are intending to create one.  He accused the federal government of not fulfilling the Pretoria agreement.

Also, forces loyal to the Debretsion Gebremichael faction of the TPLF have been developing tense relations with the federal government over the past few months.

Tadesse Worede was appointed to the position in April this year. The Federal government expected, at least from what was stated publicly, that he would overcome the political crisis in the region, and avoid another war.

He was also mandated to end what the federal government described as “illegal relation with foreign powers,” insinuating the rapprochement and subsequent alliance formation between the  TPLF and Eritrean government

On the surface, the tension between the Federal government and the armed forces in the Tigray region seems to be related to the implementation of the Pretoria agreement which officially ended the bloody war between the TPLF led Tigray regional government and the Federal government.

The armed forces and Debretsion led TPLF faction accuse the Federal government of failure to fully implement the Pretoria agreement. Among key issues are the return of displaced people from Wolkait and Humera, and the return of “Tigrean territories” – a reference to the aforementioned areas which were included to Tigray after 1991 following TPLF’s military victory over Colonel Mengistua Hailemariam government. The TPLF led Tigray regional government lost political and military control over these areas following the 2020-2022 war.

There has been a mounting anti-war movement in the region. The Debristion faction has lost momentum as a group of the armed forces resolved to resist the move for war. The group that later called itself Tigary Peace Force (TPF) has been reorganizing in the Afar region for a military resistance. There were even reports of skirmishes whereby the Debretsion force accused the former of provocations.

Apart from what used to be TPLF forces, opposition parties in the region have been condemning the Tadesse Worede administration and Debretsion faction of the TPLF for preparing for another round of war, this time in alliance with the Eritrean government. The Eritrean government itself has been accusing Ethiopian government officials of preparing for a war.

The Federal government has not yet remarked on the latest statement of Tadesse Worede.

  1. Idiot! Western Tigray was not included to Tigray after 1991 by TPLF’s. It is originally part of Tigray. It was taken from Tigray by Atse Hailesealssie in 1948 Ethiopian calendar. Don’t write if you dent read!
