Toronto – Children reportedly hurt after stage collapse during rehearsal on Saturday. They were said to be part of the event for the rally the ruling Prosperity Party organized in the capital Addis Ababa to celebrate the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
However, sources indicate that it was the Addis Ababa City Administration that organized the event. Notably, the administration itself is a prosperity party installation without formal electoral process in the city.
BBC Amharic on Sunday reported that the number of children hurt from the accident and their conditions is unspecified. The government has not released information to the public.
The stage was a wooden one.
The source added that effort to get information regarding their condition by contacting the hospital to which they are reportedly taken was not a success.
The Prosperity Party did not cancel the event following the accident.
It happened on Saturday in the evening around 8:30 P.M, local time at Meskel Square in Addis Ababa – where the rally took place on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the ruling party executed the event as planned. Senior government officials including President Taye Atske Selassie, Defense Chief of Staff Berhanu Jula, Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abebe and Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh attended the rally.

Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP) and Enat Party, among the leading opposition political parties in the country, this week vocally criticized the government move to capitalize on GERD completion to intensify political propaganda campaigns.
They argue that the Ethiopian People was the key player in the dam project and take the credit for the successful completion of it. The ruling party demonstrated a tendency to project its leader, Abiy Ahmed, as a “hero” in connection with the completion of the project. The party has been suffering from a legitimacy crisis for several years now.
The project was locally funded and took 14 years to complete it. The total cost is estimated to be over $5 billion. It was officially inaugurated on September 9.

Let’s all hope and pray that none of the kids were seriously hurt. This apparently will put some sort of a damper on the on-going celebration of Adwa The 2nd Dam.
But, how come there are no organized celebrations in various countries by our Diaspora? This dam should be seen beyond what we feel about the current regime. Governments come and go. That country has hosted three regimes since 1974already but other dams are still around and generating electricity. This dam will be around for more than a century with bidding farewell to regimes that will be on the revolving door. That is unless some domestic bigots and connivers supported by foreign Ethiopia haters blow it up.
So, what’s up with our Diaspora?
