Toronto – Abiy Ahmed led administration has been facing a legitimacy crisis for a combination of factors including the security and economic crisis in the country.
His government seems to think that the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which was inaugurated on September 9, is an important playing card to regain the public trust it has lost over the past few years.
A huge pro-government rally is organized for Sunday at Meskel Square in the capital Addis Ababa. It is framed as a celebration of GERD.
The Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party (EPRP) and Enat Party this week expressed concern that the ruling party is intensifying propaganda campaigns by exploiting the completion of GERD. The parties this week said the Ethiopian people take the credit for it, not the ruling party or leader of the ruling party (Prime MInister Abiy Ahmed).
They also point out that the country is in a multifaceted crisis – including the full fledged war in the Amhara and Oromia regions. They also argue that the government is the reason for the crisis in the country.
Opposition parties have been banned from organizing peaceful demonstrations and anti-war rallies in the capital Addis Ababa. There were even instances when opposition leaders were arrested for organizing anti-war rallies in Addis Ababa a few years ago.
The Federal police have announced the closure of over 20 major roads in the city until the completion of the rally.

Some of the images of the Prime Minister holding the hands of the leaders of neighboring countries may look to be too animated. But in occasions of such major inaugurations such rare protocol jumping could happen.
When it comes to diplomatic protocol the late Emperor Haile Selassie was the best that country ever produced. But he also had moments where he was arms in arms with other foreign dignitaries. I still remember a photo of him with Empress Farah of Iran in 1971 when he attended the 2500 year anniversary of the Persian Empire in October 1971 and also with Queen Elizabeth of Britain at another occasion in Addis/Finfine. In the moment of excitement, that was perfectly alright. Here they are.
