Toronto – Eritrea is accusing Ethiopian authorities of making continued “reckless” military threats. The Minister for Information, Yemane Gebre Meskel, took the matter to the X (formerly Twitter) platform again.

His statement openly linked the matter to the ruling Prosperity Party officials.

In a message he shared on Wednesday,  Yemane called the recent remarks from Ethiopian officials regarding Red Sea as ” political hogwash”

This week, Major General Teshome Gemechu remarked “access to the sea is a matter of existence. It is something you can pay any price for.” He remarked so during an interview with a local media.

He is serving in the army as Defense Force Foreign Relation and Military Cooperation Director.

General Gemechu also raised questions about the circumstances under which Assab was included as part of Eritrea. He argued that it was an autonomy at the time but the transitional government, then, “which does not have a mandate handed it over to Eritrea.”

Yemane Gremeskel says the arguments are fallacious.

He wrote, “The trite arguments – or political hogwash so to speak – are too boring and fallacious to merit serious discourse.  The latest one is on Eritrea’s 1993 Referendum.”

Furthermore, he stated that “There is visible resurgence of reckless saber-rattling, accompanied by disdainful distortion of Eritrea’s ancient, medieval and modern history, by Prosperity Party (or Potemkin Party, choose your pick) officials and trolls these days.”

Eritrea’s Minister for Information also responded to the claims that the referendum was faulty.  He argued that  “the 1993 referendum was accordingly conducted through the unilateral choice and decision of Eritrea in accordance with established modalities.  It was not, and could not, be predicated on the prior consent, endorsement or greenlight of the occupying power.”

The Minister went further to reiterate the argument that Eritrea’s “decolonization right ” should have been exercised in the 1940’s.

Apart from General Gemechu, Abiy Ahmed himself made a reference to access to the sea again when he sat for an interview with one of his minister’s, Daniel Kiberet.  He insinuated that access to the sea agenda will be pursued once the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is inaugurated.  He explicitly stated the price to be paid for it is much less than the sacrifice paid to complete the GERD project.
