” Killing Religious Leaders Has Become Unwritten Law” : Enat Party

Toronto – “Oromia region especially Arsi zone has become blood land,” Enat Party, one of the leading opposition parties in Ethiopia, said in a statement it released on Monday.
The statement came in response to the latest round of attacks against Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church in the Arsi area of Oromia region of Ethiopia.
A 78 years old priest was reportedly killed on Saturday in Robe district of Arsi Zone, Oromia region of Ethiopia. The victim is identified as Memhir Nigussie. He was killed in his own residence around 5 a.m. local time. Gunmen operating in the area killed him in a horrifying manner. He was riddled with bullets, according to the statement from the party.
The Priest had been serving at the Odda Kidus Giorghis Church in Meseranje locality of Robe District.
In a related development, Afework Abebaw, a religious scholar with authority on Degua, in the tradition of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, was reportedly killed in Addis Ababa Bole Sub city.
He was reportedly killed around 7 p.m. local time in the Tafo Adebabay area. He was reportedly on his way home when he was riddled with bullets, the party disclosed citing family members.
“Ruthless killing we used to hear from a distance is now making it to our capital city…” Enat party added. It also highlighted that “the cover up for this crime is a significant indicator that all the people are living in a kind of shadow of death.”
“It is not an exaggeration to say that government or government structure does not exist. In what could be said on a daily basis and in a coordinated way religious leaders get kidnapped,” Enat Party said in its statement blaming government inaction against ceaseless attacks on religious leaders.
The party was very explicit in its condemnation of the ruling “Prosperity Party” government, which many link it to the Prosperity Gospel congregation in the United States; also the party has significant members of leadership from the Islamic faith. It said “over the past seven years [since Abiy Ahmed took over power] it has become a main task to hunt down great religious fathers, kill them and cover it up.”
Furthermore, the party pointed out that the killings are deliberately made horrifying to intimidate others. “In recent times, it has reached to a point that the killings have become common and familiar,” the party added.
Notably, the pattern of attack against Ethiopian orthodox Tewahedo Church fathers in Oromia and other parts of Ethiopia seems to be meticulous and unending. Worse, oftentimes the killers are not even arrested let alone face justice.

This is a very sad story.
I just read another sad story on our Diaspora website where three young people originally from the old country were shot and killed in their apartment in Cincinnati, Ohio 2 days ago. What a heart wrenching tragic story. My family mourns with the loved ones of the deceased. These young members our community had the whole world with all its opportunities ahead of them but they were cut down in such horrific way. They left their homeland for lack of opportunities and they are murdered where they found them. That makes it doubly saddening. After reading this tragic story I did some research online and found out the shooter had tried to commit suicide but did not die and is still in life threatening critical condition. It seems to be a murder suicide case but the nature of their relationship is not known. I just discovered that the shooter was a 26-year old man and he had a romantic relationship with one of our murdered daughters. It was not a hate crime.
