Toronto –  Two armed forces operations in the Amhara and Oromia regions of Ethiopia reportedly deny informal talks of negotiation to end hostility and work together against Abiy Ahmed’s Administration.

BBC Amharic cited Jiregna Gudeta, who is said to be advisor to commander of the militant group operating in the Oromia region of Ethiopia as saying, “The talk that they have met on the border is false. To hold a talk together for one that struggles for freedom has no harm. However, so far there is no entity that talks that way.”

Also, the BBC Amharic on Friday reported leaders of the two groups were contacted. The report stated that they denied holding talks, and that there has not been contacts between them. Notably, the Federal government and Amhara regional state  have ben making accusation that the Fano group is working with  Debretsion led faction of Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF)

Fano forces have been extensively operating in the Amhara region over the past two years undertaking armed struggle against the Federal government. And the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), which used to be the military wing Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) until the latter officially disowned it about four or five years ago, has been operating in the Oromia region of Ethiopia for more than six years now.

The two armed groups are undertaking their armed resistance standing on different political grounds.

The Fano forces justify their existence with a mission to reverse existential threats against the Amhara people. Reputable human rights organizations, activists and media outlets have been reporting targeted massacres of Ethnic Amharic in different parts of Ethiopia. The intensity and prevalence of the attack in the Oromia region is stronger. The OLA itself has been implicated in the massacres of ethnic Amharas.  The government itself is also implicated in the massacre of ethnic Amharas. Its involvement ranges from inaction in the event of targeted attacks against Ethiopia Amharas to directly undertaking massacres in the region under the guise of fighting Fano forces.

The OLA, on the other hand, has been fighting for the establishment of the Oromia republic. It is often framed as “the rights of Oromo people self-determination.”  Activists who have been prominent for mobilizing ethnic Oromo along a radical line as a political support base, as in the case of Jawar Mohammed, are now professing a different goal – democratic Ethiopia.

  1. I ain’t surprised by this denial. The denial of any talks for collaboration tells the real story about these three groups. They have no doable program or programs that they share in principles. Debre and the Rastaman are hell bent to yank away/carve out territories to proclaim their hand made republics. The ones in Amhara regions seem to have no declared objective. They are just too mad as hell to a mountain of issues and that runaway anger seems to have driven them into the wilderness grouped around a multitude of armed bands. Meanwhile, the youth in these three regions is paying a heavy price with its Allah created life and intricately crafted limbs. It just breaks my heart.

The youth of that country has been pulled and pushed in all directions beginning 1974 and millions having perished since then. Then it was deacons of Marx, Lenin and Mao but now it is bigots and connivers. Mark my word. These three groups will never hold talks to collaborate or merge. Their leaders are steeped with hard as steel ambition. Let’s think about a scenario. Let’s say the current regime suddenly falls apart and the capital becomes an open city. Just imagine that for a moment and have these groups in the capital in your picture. You think Mogadishu just went belly up in 1991 when every armed militia marched into town victorious. It gives me shivers just thinking about it. You think vagabonds are wreaking havoc in those three regions now with kidnappings and murdering aid workers, healthcare employees, teachers and torching schools and clinics. It will be a perfect recipe for extinction of every living, breathing human being. And that is not that funny, okay.
