Toronto – Raya area has been experiencing tension since after the end of the two years war between the TPLF led Tigray Regional state and Abiy Ahmed’s federal government.
Latest reports indicate that the tension in what is called South Tigray is only worsening. General Tadesse Worede, who was appointed as interim president in April this year, appointed a new head to zones in Tigray.
But his new appointment was in a collision course with the aspiration of the residents. Tadese is seen as Pro-TPLF faction that is under the leadership of Debretsion Gebremichael.
Zinabu Gebremedhim, the new appointee, on Tuesday was escorted by heavily armed forces and entered Maychew city. He reportedly took the administration office by “force.” A video footage purportedly showing his arrival to the city armed escorts has been circulating on social media over the past two days.
Haftu Kiros, head of the zone who was reportedly not on good terms with Tadesse Worede and Debretsion Gebremichael, was removed by force. He reportedly moved to areas where an armed resistance group is operating in the area.
Zinabu Gebremedhim has reportedly made an official announcement that “administrative change has been made.” He is cited as saying that Haftu Kiros no longer have the authority to decide on matters pertaining to Raya areas.
This is for the second time when the interim administration is appointing a new head to the zone. A few weeks ago, the new appointment triggered a public protest. People took to the street opposing the removal of Haftu Kiros. Notably, there was another massive protest in Mehoni about a week ago protesting the decision of the interim president.
There has been a growing movement against the TPLF in South Tigray areas over the past few months. The TPLF under Debresion Gemremichael is allegedly working on triggering another round of conflict in the region. Its alliance with Eritrea is seen as a high risk factor to bring another round of conflict to the region. The TPLF denies the allegation.
The Interim administration under Tadesse Worede is believed to have a pro-Debretsion led TPLF stance. Apart from people in south Tigray, opposition parties operating in the region have been openly making similar accusations.
